Commentary for Doctrine and Covenants: Sections 6-9

Section 6

Background Information

OC desired for a confirmation (witness) that translation he was involved in was true. Section 6 is the Lord's response.

Section

1 A great and marvelous work is about to come forth unto the children of men [Nephi and the Lord discuss the fulls scope of the great and marvelous work. This work includes the conversion of the Gentiles. redemption of the Lamanites, and gathering and restoring the House of Israel to the land of their inheritance]. 2 Behold, I am God; give heed unto my word, which is quick and powerful, sharper than a two-edged sword [why is God's word described as a two-edged sword?], to the dividing asunder of both joints and marrow; therefore give heed unto my words. 3 Behold, the field is white already to harvest; therefore, whoso desireth to reap, let him thrust in his sickle with his might [the vineyard is the world. Those who labor (which is all LDS) are to do so with all their might; there is not shirking or slacking of one's duty to gather souls], and reap while the day lasts [eventually "night" will come wherein no labor can be performed], that he may treasure up for his soul everlasting salvation in the kingdom of God. 4 Yea, whosoever will thrust in his sickle and reap, the same is called of God [those who seeks to save souls are called by God]. 5 Therefore, if you will ask of me you shall receive; if you will knock it shall be opened unto you.

  • Night Comes: The "day" is metaphor for calling others to repentance. This makes since. Laborers work in the "vineyard" during the day. They don't work at night. Likewise, the same is for us. Eventually there will be a time where the calling of repentance will have ceased. This happened to Mormon, who was unable to preach repentance to the Nephites because of their wickedness. The same will occur with us.
    • In fact, this is prophesied by Amos: "11 ¶ Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord: 12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it."
    • This verse is often contrued to refer to the Great Apostasy. However, read in context, we see that this interpreation is incorrect. For one, the famine described comes after the sun has "gone down at noon" and the sky is dark in the clear day. That didn't happen during the great apostasy. Interesting as well, is that the sun disappearing in the noon day is like there being night. Thus the metaphor of day and night is both figurative and literal.
    • But when this happens, those who have not repented will be lost from truth. They will wander, but unable to find it.
    • Hence the reason why we, as labors in the vineyard, can't shirk or slacken in our duties. The souls of others depends on it.
  • Called of God: The work of God is to bring salvation to others. God calls us to this work. If we perform this work, we magnify our calling. As result, we then qualify for the fullness of the Melchizedek priesthood, as explain by Alma in Alma 13. After all, is it any surprise as to why Nephi in Helaman 10 receives the sealing power as he is doing missionary work?

6 Now, as you have asked, behold, I say unto you, keep my commandments, and seek to bring forth and establish the cause of Zion; 7 Seek not for riches but for wisdom, and behold, the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto you, and then shall you be made rich [we receive the mysteries of God by seeking for light and truth (wisdom) over the things of the world]. Behold, he that hath eternal life is rich. 8 Verily, verily, I say unto you, even as you desire of me so it shall be unto you; and if you desire, you shall be the means of doing much good in this generation. 9 Say nothing but repentance unto this generation; keep my commandments, and assist to bring forth my work, according to my commandments, and you shall be blessed.

  • Desire: God rewards us according to our desire and the rewards we receive a commensurate with our desires (compare John the Beloved's desire to remain and earth versus Peter's desire to "come speedily into the kingdom of God, or the 3 Nephites.)

10 Behold thou hast a gift [what is this gift?], and blessed art thou because of thy gift [something about OC's gift is a blessing to him]. Remember it is sacred and cometh from above [the gift is also sacred]— 11 And if thou wilt inquire, thou shalt know mysteries which are great and marvelous; therefore thou shalt exercise thy gift, that thou mayest find out mysteries, that thou mayest bring many to the knowledge of the truth, yea, convince them of the error of their ways [the gift that OC allows him to inquire and learn the mysteries of God. OC is commanded to "exercise" this gift]. 12 Make not thy gift known unto any save it be those who are of thy faith [OC may only tell those who are of the faith about his gift]. Trifle not with sacred things [We trifle with sacred things when we make them common].

13 If thou wilt do good, yea, and hold out faithful to the end, thou shalt be saved in the kingdom of God, which is the greatest of all the gifts of God; for there is no gift greater than the gift of salvation. 14 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, blessed art thou for what thou hast done; for thou hast inquired of me, and behold, as often as thou hast inquired thou hast received instruction of my Spirit [the blessing OC receives from answering is instruction from the Spirit]. If it had not been so, thou wouldst not have come to the place where thou art at this time.

15 Behold, thou knowest that thou hast inquired of me and I did enlighten thy mind; and now I tell thee these things that thou mayest know that thou hast been enlightened by the Spirit of truth; 16 Yea, I tell thee, that thou mayest know that there is none else save God that knowest thy thoughts and the intents of thy heart. 17 I tell thee these things as a witness unto thee—that the words or the work which thou hast been writing are true. 18 Therefore be diligent; stand by my servant Joseph, faithfully, in whatsoever difficult circumstances he may be for the word’s sake.

19 Admonish him [JS] in his faults, and also receive admonition of him [Like OC was to JS, we are to admonish each other in our faults, that we make be corrected and more perfect]. Be patient; be sober; be temperate; have patience, faith, hope and charity. 20 Behold, thou art Oliver, and I have spoken unto thee because of thy desires; therefore treasure up these words in thy heart. Be faithful and diligent in keeping the commandments of God, and I will encircle thee in the arms of my love [serving God leads to joy because we feel His love]. 21 Behold, I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I am the same that came unto mine own, and mine own received me not. I am the light which shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not.

22 Verily, verily, I say unto you, if you desire a further witness [that God is speaking to him], cast your mind upon the night that you cried unto me in your heart, that you might know concerning the truth of these things. 23 Did I not speak peace to your mind concerning the matter? What greater witness can you have than from God? 24 And now, behold, you have received a witness; for if I have told you things which no man knoweth have you not received a witness? 25 And, behold, I grant unto you a gift, if you desire of me, to translate, even as my servant Joseph.

26 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that there are records which contain much of my gospel, which have been kept back because of the wickedness of the people; 27 And now I command you, that if you have good desires—a desire to lay up treasures for yourself in heaven—then shall you assist in bringing to light, with your gift, those parts of my scriptures which have been hidden because of iniquity. 28 And now, behold, I give unto you, and also unto my servant Joseph, the keys of this gift, which shall bring to light this ministry; and in the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.

  • Promise to OC: The Lord promises to OC that if he has good desires that he will, like JS, bring forth other records, which records are are hidden "because of iniquity" through the gift he has been given (which I'll discuss in chapter 8).
  • Keys of this gift: Refers to actions one must take to access power from heaven. Here, the Lord has explained that the "action" to using his gift is to exercise good desires.

29 Verily, verily, I say unto you, if they reject my words, and this part of my gospel and ministry, blessed are ye, for they can do no more unto you than unto me. 30 And even if they do unto you even as they have done unto me, blessed are ye, for you shall dwell with me in glory. 31 But if they reject not my words, which shall be established by the testimony which shall be given, blessed are they, and then shall ye have joy in the fruit of your labors.

32 Verily, verily, I say unto you, as I said unto my disciples, where two or three are gathered together in my name, as touching one thing, behold, there will I be in the midst of them—even so am I in the midst of you. 33 Fear not to do good, my sons, for whatsoever ye sow, that shall ye also reap; therefore, if ye sow good ye shall also reap good for your reward. 34 Therefore, fear not, little flock; do good; let earth and hell combine against you, for if ye are built upon my rock, they cannot prevail. 35 Behold, I do not condemn you; go your ways and sin no more; perform with soberness the work which I have commanded you. 36 Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not.

  • Questions: What does it mean to look unto the Lord in every thought? How can we do this? Is such a thing even possible? Moreover, the Lord explain (after the semicolon) that we need to look unto the Lord with doubt or fear. Why? Why does doubt and fear prevent us from looking to the Lord?

37 Behold the wounds which pierced my side, and also the prints of the nails in my hands and feet; be faithful, keep my commandments, and ye shall inherit the kingdom of heaven. Amen.

Section 7

Background Information

From the scriptures, we learn of three records that will come froth in the last days. First, is the sealed portion, which contains a revelation of "all things from the foundation of the world unto the end thereof" (see 2 Nephi 27:10). Second, is the records of the lost 10 tribes of Israel. Third, a complete record of the writings of John the Apostle. D&C 7 begins John's record. D&C 93 contains more of John's record as well, although it's not clear if the John referred to in 93 is John the Baptist of John the Beloved.

D&C 7 came about in answer to JS and OC's question regarding what happened to John the Beloved. According to the headnotes, this revelation "is a translated version of the record made on parchment by John and hidden up by himself." The exact date of this revelation is not certain, although both the Book of Commandments (prior to Doctrine and Covenants) and all editions of the Doctrine and Covenants place this revelation before the revelation received in section 8.

Section

1 And the Lord said unto me: John, my beloved, what desirest thou? For if you [this you is pluarl, thus Christ is addressing all his apostles] shall ask what you [plural] will, it shall be granted unto you [plural -- Christ tells his apostles that they desire will be granted to them]. 2 And I [John speaking] said unto him [to the Lord]: Lord, give unto me power over death, that I may live and bring souls unto thee. 3 And the Lord said unto me: Verily, verily, I say unto thee, because thou desirest this thou shalt tarry until I come in my glory, and shalt prophesy before nations, kindreds, tongues and people. 4 And for this cause the Lord said unto Peter: If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? For he desired of me that he might bring souls unto me, but thou desiredst that thou mightest speedily come unto me in my kingdom.

  • Rewarded according to our desires: John and Peter were given different rewards because they desired different thing.

5 I say unto thee, Peter, this was a good desire; but my beloved has desired that he might do more, or a greater work yet among men than what he has before done. 6 Yea, he has undertaken a greater work; therefore I will make him as flaming fire and a ministering angel; he shall minister for those who shall be heirs of salvation who dwell on the earth. 7 And I will make thee to minister for him and for thy brother James; and unto you three [Peter, James, and John] I will give this power and the keys of this ministry until I come.

  • Peter's desire was good. But John's was greater -- because he desired to do more work for the salvation of souls. As result, John is made a ministering angel to those who are heirs of salvation. And he will minister to Peter and James. Similarly, each of our interactions (including revelations and blessings) with the Lord will be based around our desires. And because our desires may be different, so too will our interaction

8 Verily I say unto you, ye shall both have according to your desires, for ye both joy in that which ye have desired.

Section 8

Background Information

Soon after JS and OC began working together in translating the plates, OC desired to not only write, but also "became exceedingly anxious to have the power to translate bestowed upon him." It's likely that section 6 (which promised OC that he would translate) furthered his desire. Moreover,

This revelation is the Lord's answer to OC desire.

Section 8 is notable because here the Lord tell OC that he has two gifts: 1) the gift of the spirit of revelation and 2) the gift of Aaron, which is the gift mentioned in section 6. Here, the main focus will be on what the gift of Aaron means in light of the other manuscripts of this revelation.

Section

1 Oliver Cowdery, verily, verily, I say unto you, that assuredly as the Lord liveth, who is your God and your Redeemer, even so surely shall you receive a knowledge of whatsoever things you shall ask in faith, with an honest heart, believing that you shall receive a knowledge concerning the engravings of old records, which are ancient, which contain those parts of my scripture of which has been spoken by the manifestation of my Spirit.

  • Conditions: OC is promised by the Lord that he will receive knowledge of whatsover things he asks if he 1) asks in faith; 2) with a honest heart; 3) believing that he will receive what he's asking for.

2 Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart. 3 Now, behold, this is the spirit of revelation; behold, this is the spirit by which Moses brought the children of Israel through the Red Sea on dry ground. 4 Therefore this is thy gift [spirit of revelation is one of OC's gifts]; apply unto it, and blessed art thou, for it shall deliver you out of the hands of your enemies, when, if it were not so, they would slay you and bring your soul to destruction. 5 Oh, remember these words, and keep my commandments. Remember, this is your gift.

  • The first gift: The first gift is the spirt of revelation. Combining verses 2-3 of section 8 with verses 8 of section 9, we can determine the keys (how we use) the spirit of revelation. First (from section 9), we must "study it out" in our minds; Second, we then ask the Lord if it is right; Third (from section 8) if it be right the Lord will tell us to our mind and heart (both, not just heart, or emotion alone). If it be wrong, then we get a "stupor of thought" which means that we'll forget what we asked.

6 Now this is not all thy gift; for you have another gift, which is the gift of Aaron; behold, it has told you many things; 7 Behold, there is no other power, save the power of God, that can cause this gift of Aaron to be with you. 8 Therefore, doubt not, for it is the gift of God; and you shall hold it in your hands, and do marvelous works; and no power shall be able to take it away out of your hands, for it is the work of God. 9 And, therefore, whatsoever you shall ask me to tell you by that means, that will I grant unto you, and you shall have knowledge concerning it.

  • Second gift: What exactly is the gift of Aaron. For one, we know from section 6 that it is sacred, must not be shared with those outside the faith, and is a blessing to him. One answer to this question is to look at the original manuscripts to see if there is any discrepancy between the manuscripts and our current D&C edition. Surprisingly there are. However, instead of looking at each manuscript separately, I found someone who had complied all the manuscripts into one. They read
    (6) … thou hast another gift which is the {gift of working with the ABC[sprout A/ rod BC] /  … behold, it has told you [many D] things. (7) Behold there is no other power save God, that can cause this [thing of nature A/ rod B/ rod of nature C/ gift of Aaron D] [to work in your hands for it is the work of God ABC/ to be with you D] (8) {… you shall hold it in your hands, and do marvelous works; and no power shall be able to take it away out of your hands, for it is the work of God. D}

    •  Here, we see that in the four manuscripts the "phrase gift of Aaron" is translated either as "gift of working with a "sprout" or "rod.
    • The words "sprout" or "rod" likely refers to "divining rods" that were used by contemporaries of OC to find water or minerals. The rod was "from nature" and consisted of a stick of some sort. The picture below shows what OC's divining rod looked like.
    • Picture of a Divining Rod
    • Apparently, although the diving rod was used by others to find water, the Lord tells OC that this rod was a gift from God. As we read in section verse 9 of section 8, OC could receive answers from the Lord by using the divining rod, much like JS received answers through the seer stones or the urim and thummim. OC is instructed to not "doubt" and that through it OC could do "marvelous works" and the rod is a "work of God." Likely OC received answers by asking to Rod "yes' or "no" questions.
    • Although this may seem strange and shocking, we should bear in mind that the Lord works with us according to our understanding. New England during the early 1800s was stepped in mysticism. OC grew up in that environment and adopted these habits and customs. The Lord used OC's belief system to communicate to him.
    • What this illustrates is that nothing is outside the hands of God in reaching out to His children. And when it comes to seeking after Him, we should not place God in a "box" of how we think he'll communicate with us. God can use any means to teach us. The more we are open to that, the more channels we permit Him to use to communicate to us. And sadly, the inverse is also true.

10 Remember that without faith you can do nothing; therefore ask in faith. Trifle not with these things [both his gifts]; do not ask for that which you ought not. 11 Ask that you may know the mysteries of God, and that you may translate and receive knowledge from all those ancient records which have been hid up [give instruction to pray about the knowledge contained on the other records], that are sacred; and according to your faith shall it be done unto you. 12 Behold, it is I that have spoken it; and I am the same that spake unto you from the beginning. Amen.

    Section 9

    Background Information

In April 1829, JS permitted OC to translate the Book of Mormon. However, when OC engaged in translating the them he had unsuccessful. Section 9 is the Lord's response to why OC failed. Notably to this revelation is that if OC had proceeded correctly in the translating process, he would have been able to translate. But because he proceeded incorrectly, the Lord removed the ability -- and conditioned that he would have the opportunity another time. Sadly, OC never received that opportunity, likely due to his disobedience.

OC's disobedience is a reminder for us all: although God could destine us for great things, if we are not obedient, we may forfeit the blessing and privilege. After being excommunicated, OC returned to the church. But he never translated the other records.

In any case, although this revelation is directed at OC, the Lord's instruction to him are relevant for us, as His instruction explain how one can use the spirit of revelation to receive answers. Unlike JS, who had the seer stone, it appears that OC's process for translation may have been different. Where JS received the dictation through the seer stone or urium and thummim, OC received it by studying it out and asking.

    Section

1 Behold, I say unto you, my son, that because you did not translate according to that which you desired of me, and did commence again to write for my servant, Joseph Smith, Jun., even so I would that ye should continue until you have finished this record, which I have entrusted unto him. 2 And then, behold, other records have I, that I will give unto you power that you may assist to translate [although OC lost the ability to translate the Book of Mormon, he is promised that he will be given other records].

3 Be patient, my son, for it is wisdom in me [when we are asked to be patient, it's often because the Lord is seeking to teach us something], and it is not expedient that you should translate at this present time. 4 Behold, the work which you are called to do is to write for my servant Joseph [OC "calling" is to be a scribe for JS]. 5 And, behold, it is because that you did not continue as you commenced, when you began to translate, that I have taken away this privilege from you.

6 Do not murmur, my son, for it is wisdom in me that I have dealt with you after this manner. 7 Behold, you have not understood; you have supposed that I would give it unto you, when you took no thought save it was to ask me. 8 But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right. 9 But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong; therefore, you cannot write that which is sacred save it be given you from me.

10 Now, if you had known this you could have translated; nevertheless, it is not expedient that you should translate now. 11 Behold, it was expedient when you commenced [the Lord approved of OC's intial attempt to translate]; but you feared [fear hinders the Spirit], and the time is past, and it is not expedient now; 12 For, do you not behold that I have given unto my servant Joseph sufficient strength, whereby it is made up? And neither of you have I condemned. 13 Do this thing which I have commanded you, and you shall prosper. Be faithful, and yield to no temptation. 14 Stand fast in the work wherewith I have called you, and a hair of your head shall not be lost, and you shall be lifted up at the last day. Amen.

Commentary for Doctrine and Covenants: Sections 3-5

Harvest Time ini France, by James Taylor Harwood

    Section 3

    Background Information:

This revelation was given to Joseph Smith through the Urium and Thummim. After this revelation, the Lord took the it away from Joseph Smith, but later returned it when Joseph inquired of the Lord. The response to his inquiry is found in section 10. In section 3, the Lord chides Joseph for giving the manuscript to Martin Harris, despite the Lord telling him no. The Lord also warns him that his calling is in jeopardy.

According to Lucy Smith, then angel told Joseph that because he "had sinned in that he had delivered the manuscript into the hands of a wicked man . . . he would of necessity suffer the consequences of his indiscretion. However, after losing the plates and the spectacles, JS continued his “suplications (sic) to God without cessation” until he “had the joy and satisfaction of again receiving the urim and Thummim. (see https://www.josephsmithpapers.org/paper-summary/revelation-july-1828-dc-3/1#historical-intro)

    Section

1 The works, and the designs, and the purposes of God cannot be frustrated, neither can they come to naught. 2 For [verse 2 explains why God's plans can't be frustrated by men] God doth not walk in crooked paths, neither doth he turn to the right hand nor to the left, neither doth he vary from that which he hath said, therefore his paths are straight, and his course is one eternal round.

    • Verse 2: Notice the connection between verse 1 and 2. Because God does not walk in crooked path and his path are straight, His works can't be frustrated. Why does walking in straight path prevent God's works for being frustrated?

3 Remember, remember that it is not the work of God that is frustrated, but the work of men; 4 For [for this reason] although a man may have many revelations, and have power to do many mighty works, yet if he boasts in his own strength, and sets at naught the counsels of God, and follows after the dictates of his own will and carnal desires, he must fall and incur the vengeance [why does the Lord use vengeance instead of justice. Is there a difference in meaning between those two word?] of a just God upon him. 5 Behold, you have been entrusted with these things [the plates], but how strict were your commandments; and remember also the promises which were made to you, if you did not transgress them. 6 And behold, how oft you have transgressed the commandments and the laws of God, and have gone on in the persuasions of men.

    • Verses 3-4: Here the Lord is explicit that no matter the calling or statute of a prophet, he can fall. And he falls through pride -- through the boasting in his own strength and not listening to God's counsel, choosing instead to follow after the his carnal desires.
    • Verse 5: Joseph was promised that he would the plates would never be taken from him if he did all that he could to protect them.
    • Verse 6: JS' action were transgression instead of sin because JS new better, but went against God anyway. Moreover, JS' weakness appears to be listening to men instead of God.

7 For, behold, you should not have feared man more than God. Although men set at naught the counsels of God, and despise his words— 8 Yet you should have been faithful; and he would have extended his arm and supported you against all the fiery darts of the adversary; and he would have been with you in every time of trouble.

    • Verse 7-8: One major test of loyalty to the Lord is whether we can trust in the Lord to support us throughout our trials. Some fail because they fail to wait upon the Lord and on His timing and instead to turn men or themselves to relieve the suffering. We fear man more than God when we listen to men OVER God.

9 Behold, thou art Joseph, and thou wast chosen to do the work of the Lord, but because of transgression, if thou art not aware thou wilt fall. 10 But remember, God is merciful; therefore, repent of that which thou hast done which is contrary to the commandment which I gave you, and thou art still chosen, and art again called to the work; 11 Except thou do this [repent], thou shalt be delivered up [to Satan's control] and become as other men [JS would have been no different than any other man], and have no more gift.

    • Verse 10-11: Despite JS' calling, he could've lost it if he didn't repent. What this shows is that there is no guarantee a prophet will remain faithful to the Lord. Hence why Nephi warns us about trusting in the arm of flesh. Our trust should be on Christ because only Christ is reliable.

12 And when thou deliveredst up that which God had given thee sight and power to translate, thou deliveredst up that which was sacred into the hands of a wicked man [Martin Harris], 13 Who [Martin Harris] has set at naught the counsels of God, and has broken the most sacred promises which were made before God, and has depended upon his own judgment and boasted in his own wisdom. [this is Martin Harris' sin -- he relied upon his wisdom and discernment] 14 And this is the reason [you gave the sacred to the profane] that thou hast lost thy privileges [the gift of translating the plates] for a season— 15 For thou hast suffered the counsel of thy director [Holy Ghost?] to be trampled upon from the beginning. [Again, the Lord stresses JS' weakness.

16 Nevertheless, my work shall go forth, for inasmuch as the knowledge of a Savior has come unto the world, through the testimony of the Jews, even so shall the knowledge of a Savior come unto my people— 17 And to the Nephites, and the Jacobites, and the Josephites, and the Zoramites, through the testimony of their fathers— 18 And this testimony shall come to the knowledge of the Lamanites, and the Lemuelites, and the Ishmaelites, who dwindled in unbelief because [causal link] of the iniquity of their fathers [wicked fathers], whom the Lord has suffered to destroy their brethren the Nephites, because of their [Nephites] iniquities and their [Nephites] abominations.

    • Verses 16-17: Just as the Jews were able to bring knowledge of the Lord to the world, the Lord will use the father of the Nephites (et al) which include Nephi, Jacob, Enos, Mormon, Moroni, etc [the "fathers"] to provide a testimony of the Lord. And that testimony will come to the Lamanites (et al.).
    • Verse 18: The word because causally links two parts of verse 18. Phrased from cause and effect, it would read: the iniquity of the Lamanite's fathers caused the Lamanites to dwindle in unbelief. Hence, the lost knowledge of the Lord. The Book of Mormon is to restore that lost knowledge.

19 And for this very purpose [restoring the Lamanites to the knowledge (testimony) of the Lord] are these plates preserved, which contain these records—that the promises of the Lord might be fulfilled, which he made to his people; [as a result of having a testimony of the Lord, the Lord's covenantal promise (which included a land of inheritance, i.e., the American land) can be given to the Lamanites] 20 And that the Lamanites might come to the knowledge of their fathers, and that they might know the promises of the Lord, and that they may believe the gospel and rely upon the merits of Jesus Christ, and be glorified through faith in his name, and that through their repentance they might be saved. Amen.

    Section 4

    Background Information

This revelation was given the Joseph Smith's father regarding his father's desire to know what the Lord "had for him to do." This revelation, moreover, was given "shortly before the translation work resumed". Although written to Joseph Smith's father, this revelation is applicable to all readers.

1 Now behold, a marvelous work is about to come forth among the children of men.

2 Therefore, [as a result of the marvelous work that is about to come forth] O ye [plural, indication that this remark applies universally, not just to Joseph Smith's father] that embark in the service of God, see that [what follows are the requirements for serving God] ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may stand blameless before God at the last day. [this appears to be a quotations of the "shema" in Deuteronomy 6] 3 Therefore, if ye have desires to serve God ye are called to the work; 4 For behold the field is white already to harvest; and lo, he that thrusteth in his sickle with his might, the same layeth up in store that he perisheth not, but bringeth salvation to his soul; 5 And faith, hope, charity and love, with an eye single to the glory of God, qualify him for the work.

    • Verse 2: Notice that we save ourselves (stand blameless for God) by working to save others. This is what the Nephite prophets meant when they said they teach the world to rid themselves of the blood of their brethren (see Mormon 9:35).
      • In Ezekiel the Lord explain this principle:
        • 18 When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. 19 Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
      • In simple terms, the Lord lays out the principle: If you don't warn the wicked, then your responsible if they without repenting. If you do warn the wicked, and even though they don't repent, you are not responsible.
      • If we think about it, this principle makes sense: if we have the knowledge of salvation, we should share that with others. For instance, imagine if Jonah didn't declare repentance to Nineveh? Or if Enoch refrained for crying repentance? Or the son of Mosiah to the Lamanites?
      • The act of serving God is to declare repentance. Repentance is a cry of warning for people to change their ways. Howsoever, to declare repentance, especially in these days, doesn't necessarily require one to get a podium and shot repentance. Instead, declaring repentance can occur when we help give people a nudge back to God. Moreover, many people don't believe in God. Thus to help they repent, we can teach them principles that will get them to believe in God. Thus declaring repentance can be teaching a person a true principle for governing their lives. For those who believe in God, we can help them by addressing their needs and concerns. We pray for assistance to guide us in our interaction. And then with love, patience, long suffering, we assist and help.
    • Verses 2-5 provides the components for one to serve God. First, the individual must serve God with all his "heart, might, mind, and strength"; second, the must have "faith, hope, charity, and love"; and third, he that faith, hope, charity, and love must be with an eye single to God's glory. Moreover, those who have desire are called provided they meet the three requirements.

6 Remember faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, brotherly kindness, godliness, charity, humility, diligence. 7 Ask, and ye shall receive; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Amen.

    • Verse 7: If we acquire the attributes listed in verse 6, then what we ask will be given to us because we'll have a better understanding of the character of God. And by having this understanding, we will know how to ask and receive.

    Section 5

    Background Information:

This revelation was given to Joseph and Martin on March, 1829, in Harmony, Pennsylvania. According to Issac Hale, he reported that he saw Joseph and Martin comparing two copies of this revelation, suggesting that this may have been given at different times. It is not clear what happened to those two copies, however, Oliver Cowdrey, moreover, had a different copy. This copy also differed from another copy that was placed into "Book of Commandments and Revelations" -- a manuscript that contained revelations given to Jospeh Smith less than a year after the Church of Christ was organized.

    Section:

1 Behold, I say unto you, that as my servant Martin Harris has desired a witness at my hand, that you, my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., have got the plates of which you have testified and borne record that you have received of me; 2 And now, behold, this shall you say unto him—he who spake unto you, said unto you: [what follows is what JS is to tell Martin Harris] I, the Lord, am God, and have given these things [the Gold Plates] unto you, my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., and have commanded you [JS] that you [JS] should stand as a witness of these things [the Gold Plates]; 3 And I have caused you [JS] that you [JS] should enter into a covenant with me [JS' translation involved a covenants with the Lord about who he could show the plates to], that you should not show them except to those persons to whom I commanded you; and you have no power over them except I grant it unto you.

4 And you [JS] have a gift to translate the plates; and this is the first gift that I bestowed upon you; and I have commanded that you should pretend to no other gift until my purpose is fulfilled in this; for I will grant unto you no other gift until it is finished. 5 Verily, I say unto you, that woe shall come unto the inhabitants of the earth if they will not hearken unto my words; 6 For hereafter [after the Book of Mormon is translated] you shall be ordained and go forth and deliver my words unto the children of men.

    • Verse 4: In our DC version, the Lord indicates that JS will have others gifts after he finishes translating ("his is the first gift that I bestowed upon you; and I have commanded that you should pretend to no other gift until my purpose is fulfilled in this"). Notably, however, is that in the earliest extand manuscript, the Lord's statement is different ("I have commanded him that he should shall pretend to no other gift for I will grant unto him no other gift). The later's wording suggests that JS' only gift was translating the Gold Plates.

7 Behold, if they [the people JS will preach to] will not believe my words [coming through the Book of Mormon], they would not believe you, my servant Joseph, if it were possible that you should show them all these things which I have committed unto you [if the people can't believe the Book of Mormon, then they won't believe the greater things the Lord has shown JS]. 8 Oh, this unbelieving and stiffnecked generation—mine anger is kindled against them. 9 Behold, verily I say unto you, I have reserved those things [not clear if the Lord is referring to the sealed portion of the Gold Plates] which I have entrusted unto you, my servant Joseph, for a wise purpose in me, and it shall be made known unto future generations; 10 But this generation shall have my word through you [through producing the Book of Mormon]; 11 And in addition to your testimony, the testimony of three of my servants, whom I shall call and ordain, unto whom I will show these things, and they shall go forth with my words that are given through you.

12 Yea, they [the three witnesses] shall know of a surety that these things are true [the Lord lists two ways that the 3 witnesses will know that the Gold Plates are true], for from heaven will I declare it unto them [the witness know of surety that the Gold Plates are real and true, because the Lord will speak to them from heaven]. 13 I will give them [three witnesses] power that they may behold and view these things [Gold Plates] as they are; 14 And to none else will I grant this power, to receive this same testimony among this generation [the three witnesses are the only ones who receive the testimony of the plates in they way they did], in this the beginning of the rising up and the coming forth of my church out of the wilderness—clear as the moon, and fair as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners.

    • Verses 12-13: The Lord lists two ways that the 3 witnesses will know that the Gold Plates are true. First, is that he will declare it to them from heaven. Second, he will give the three witnesses power to "behold and view" the plates as they are.
      • What might it mean for the Lord to give power to "behold and view" the plates as they are? Does it mean that the 3 witnesses will have understanding about the purpose of the plates not discernible to the eye? Does it suggest that without this power, that that anyone else looking at the plates would simply see ordinary plates?

15 And the testimony of three witnesses will I send forth of my word. 16 And behold, whosoever believeth on my words [the Book of Mormon], them will I visit with the manifestation of my Spirit; and they shall be born of me, even of water and of the Spirit— 17 And you must wait yet a little while, for ye are not yet ordained — 18 And their testimony shall also go forth unto the condemnation of this generation if they harden their hearts against them; 19 For a desolating scourge shall go forth among the inhabitants of the earth, and shall continue to be poured out from time to time, if they repent not, until the earth is empty, and the inhabitants thereof are consumed away and utterly destroyed by the brightness of my coming [if nobody repents, the Lord will allow the future judgments to go until the earth is empty. For only the holy (sanctified) can dwell in the presence of God]

    • In earliest extant manuscript, veres 15-19 read differently. "...& the testimony of three Witnesses will I send forth & my word & behold whosoever beleaveth in my word him will I visit with the manifestations of my spirit & they shall be Born of me & their testimony shall also go forth & thus if the People of this Generation harden not their hearts I will work a reformation among them & I will put down all lieings & deceivings & Priest Craft & envyings & strifes & Idolatries and sorceries & all maner of Iniquities & I will establish my Church yea even the church which was taught by my Desiples8 & now if this Generation do hardon their hearts against my words Behold I deliver them up unto Satan for he reigneth & hath much Power at this time for he that hath hath got great hold upon the hearts of the People of this Generation & how far from the iniquities of Sodom and Gomorrah do they come at this time & Behold the Swoard of Justice doth hang above their heads & if they persist in the hardness of ther hearts the time cometh that it must fall upon them
      • The accepting of the Book of Mormon would allow the Lord to remove lying, deceiving, priestcraft, envying, strifes, idolatries, sorceries, and all manner of iniquities. This is the power of the Book of Mormon.
      • Notably this earliest extant manuscript adds that those who harden their hearts against the Book of Mormon, will be delivered unto Satan. One explanation for this is because there is no other option. If a person rejects light, then he has accepted darkness. And darkness is the dominion of Satan.

20 Behold, I tell you these things [referring to the end times], even as I also told the people of the destruction of Jerusalem [see Matthew 24]; and my word shall be verified at this time as it hath hitherto been verified. 21 And now I command you, my servant Joseph, to repent and walk more uprightly before me, and to yield to the persuasions of men no more [JS' weakness was to trust in the arm of flesh]; 22 And that you be firm in keeping the commandments wherewith I have commanded you; and if you do this, behold I grant unto you eternal life, even if you should be slain [JS receives a promise upon which he can exercise faith. If JS keep the commandments the Lord has told him, he will have eternal life].

23 And now, again, I speak unto you, my servant Joseph, concerning the man that desires the witness [Martin Harris] 24 Behold, I say unto him, he exalts himself and does not humble himself sufficiently before me [Martin Harris' pride stood in the way of him seeing the Gold Plates]; but if he will bow down before me, and humble himself in mighty prayer and faith, in the sincerity of his heart, then will I grant unto him a view of the things which he desires to see 25 And then he shall say unto the people of this generation: Behold, I have seen the things which the Lord hath shown unto Joseph Smith, Jun., and I know of a surety that they are true, for I have seen them, for they have been shown unto me by the power of God and not of man.

    • Verses 23-24: Just as Martin Harris' pride stood in the way of receiving what he desired, so too does our pride stand in the way of receiving answers to our prayers or having greater interactions with heaven.

26 And I the Lord command him, my servant Martin Harris, that he shall say no more unto them concerning these things, except he shall say: I have seen them, and they have been shown unto me by the power of God; and these are the words which he shall say. 27 But if he deny this he will break the covenant which he has before covenanted with me, and behold, he is condemned. 28 And now, except he humble himself and acknowledge unto me the things that he has done which are wrong, and covenant with me that he will keep my commandments, and exercise faith in me, behold, I say unto him, he shall have no such views, for I will grant unto him no views of the things of which I have spoken. 29 And if this be the case, I command you, my servant Joseph, that you shall say unto him, that he shall do no more, nor trouble me any more concerning this matter.

    • The Lord commands that Martin Harris' is to repent by doing four things: 1) Humble himself; 2) acknowledge to the Lord all the things he has done that were wrong; 3) covenant with the Lord that he will keep His commandments; and 4) exercise faith in the Lord.

30 And if this be the case, behold, I say unto thee Joseph, when thou hast translated a few more pages thou shalt stop for a season, even until I command thee again; then thou mayest translate again. 31 And except thou do this, behold, thou shalt have no more gift, and I will take away the things which I have entrusted with thee.

32 And now, because I foresee the lying in wait to destroy thee, yea, I foresee that if my servant Martin Harris humbleth not himself and receive a witness from my hand, that he will fall into transgression; 33 And there are many that lie in wait to destroy thee from off the face of the earth; and for this cause, that thy days may be prolonged, I have given unto thee these commandments. 34 Yea, for this cause I have said: Stop, and stand still until I command thee, and I will provide means whereby thou mayest accomplish the thing which I have commanded thee. 35 And if thou art faithful in keeping my commandments, thou shalt be lifted up at the last day. Amen.

How to Study About the End Times

    Why Study the End Times?

When most of us think about the End Times, we associate it with fringe level thinking. This association has likely been facilitated by movies and their depiction of those warning about the End Times. I know from my experience that many "disaster" movies often feature a street preacher holding up a sign warning about the apocalypse. This street preacher is often depicted as homeless and even insane. The later (being insane) is further emphasized by the fact that even though society is devastated by the natural disaster, it still survives, indicating that the street preacher was wrong. This is unfortunate because studying about the End Times is a practice we should all engage in.

In the scriptures, there are two main prophecies: First, is the initial coming of Christ. Second, is His Second coming.

The Nephites took the study of Christ initial coming seriously. From the beginning pages of the Book of Mormon, Nephi writes that he has used the scriptures to teach about the coming of Christ. Many critics of the Book of Mormon point out that the overt Christology shows the Book of Mormon is a work of fiction, as they argue that the Old Testament does not discuss Christ is such expressly. Some even suggest the messiah figure of Christ developed after the Old Testament period.

Whether or not the Old Testament people knew about the messiah in the same way as those in the Book of Mormon is not the point. The point is that the Nephite understanding of His coming was widely known and discussed, and His coming was known in explicit terms. And it could only be widely known and discussed because certain people were willing to study His coming, which they shared with others.

The Nephites were likely unique in this regard and their study allowed them to "prepare their hearts and mind" for what was to come.

Likewise, we should engage in the endeavor and seek to have our "hearts and minds" prepared for what is to come.

Although the Old Testament is an ancient document, written thousands of years ago, it contains many prophecies about the end times. In addition to the Old Testament, we also have the New Testament, the Book of Mormon, and the Doctrine and Covenants.

If the end times weren't important, then God would not have preserved its prophecy in the scriptures.

Moreover, as LDS we have more access and knowledge about the end times than other Christian sect, putting us in a position to learn much and be prepared in much.

What follows is a brief overview of how to utilize the scriptures to learn more about the end times, so you can be prepared like the Nephites were.

    Scriptures to Read

Although there is no set way to study about the end times, here is what I would recommend. I would first collect all the passages pertaining to the end times in the Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants. The reason I would start here is because these books are relatively straightforward in their description of the end times, providing a solid basis of understanding.

The following are passages that discuss end time events

    Book of Mormon

    • 1 Nephi
      • 11-14
      • 20-22
    • 2 Nephi
      • 3
      • 6
      • 25-30
    • 3 Nephi
      • 16
      • 20-21
      • 24
      • 25
      • 29

    Doctrine and Covenants

    • 1
    • 5
    • 29
    • 33-25
    • 38
    • 43
    • 45
    • 49
    • 56
    • 58
    • 61
    • 63-64
    • 84-88
    • 90
    • 97
    • 101
    • 103
    • 109-110
    • 112
    • 113
    • 116
    • 119
    • 124
    • 133

After having established a firm foundation, I would then study Isaiah. You can start by first studying from the Book of Mormon to serve as an introduction. Afterwards, you can then read the entire book of Isaiah in the Old Testament.

Isaiah is the most quoted prophet in the New Testament as well as the Book of Mormon. In fact, when Christ visits the Nephites he commands them to search out the words of Isaiah, for "great are [his] words."

Isaiah's words are great because no other prophet (except maybe John) discusses the events of the end times in such detail and depth. Some think that Isaiah's prophecies are historical. But this is incorrect. Most of his prophecies concern these latter days. Isaiah uses his geo-political knowledge to describe events that will befall us -- the world today. In fact, Nephi, who sees the vision of the end times, appends Isaiah's words to his own to provide a more complete picture.

Although Isaiah is undoubtedly a challenge, there is one resource that can help. It's not perfect, but it will help set you on the proper course and help to distill the complex book into digestible parts.

One source is Avraham Gileadi. He has published a few book that discuss and explain the prophecies of Isaiah. I recommend reading the Book of Isaiah. He also has a website where you can access his commentary on Isaiah for free. Another source is Verse-by-Verse Ministry, which features in-depth lesson about Isaiah (as well as other books of scripture). You can find it online or download the app.

Again, these sources are not perfect, but they will provide an helpful basis and background to Isaiah that will help you to understand his words. Moreover, when any source you read, be critical about what you're reading and hearing. Don't just accept it as truth because a scholar and expert has said the passage means x. Use the Spirit to guide and be willing to change your understanding in light of new and better information.

After reading Isaiah, there are a few options. One option is to read the remainder of the Old Testament prophets, as many of these provide prophecy for the end times.

There is also the option of reading the Book of Revelation. Again, this book is dense and loaded with Hebraic symbolism, but you can get through it by working methodically. One method that has been helpful for me is to chart out the different groups mentioned and the different time periods. In my book I discuss how to do this.

Another option is to read the words of Christ. Christ addressed the end times through parables and explicitly. Matthew 24 is an example where Christ is explicit in description of the end times.

Moreover, when you read the scriptures, if you're reading them in the LDS version, then ignore the chapter headings. As I explained in my book, those headings are not doctrine and were provided to be an aide only. The headings unfortunately are inaccurate when it comes to end time scripture. So ignore them completely, or else you get confused and come away with an incorrect understanding.

    Lest We Forget

Our ability to understanding the scriptures is dependent how much of the Spirit we have. If we have repented and received the gift of the Holy Ghost, then we'll have the Spirit with us as a constant companion to teach us. The Holy Ghost won't necessary reveal what we desire with a snap of the figures. But it will aide us as we diligently seek for light and truth. If we desire to learn and are willing to make the sacrifices, then the Holy Ghost is activated in our lives. And the more we are able to align our eye to the glory of God, the more we'll be able to understand -- until we know the mysteries of God in full.

If we haven't repented, then our ability to understand scriptures will be limited. Moreover, because much of end-time prophecy is cryptic and veiled, the only way you'll understand the passages is through inspiration and revelation of the Holy Ghost. And this makes sense: only those who have repented of all their sins should be given the knowledge of what is to come.

Commentary for Doctrine and Covenants: Section 2

    Section 2

1 Behold, I will reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the hand of Elijah the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. 2 And he shall plant in the hearts [notice that his is phrased differently than in the Old Testament] of the children the promises made to the fathers, and the hearts of the children shall turn to their fathers. 3 If it were not so, the whole earth would be utterly wasted at his coming.

    Breaking down the passage

    • Verse 1: Before the coming of the Lord, Elijah will reveal Priesthood
    • Verse 2: The coming of Elijah is to 1) plant a promise made to the fathers in the hearts of the children AND 2) turn the hearts of the children to their fathers.
    • Verse 3: If the priesthood is not revealed by Elijah, then the whole earth would be wasted at the Lord's coming
      • The referent for "it" is likely referring to the Priesthood because the it is singular instead of plural (it v. these). The reason being is that the Priesthood is necessary element for the planting of promises and turning the hearts -- it's what allows the planting and turning to happen.
    Plant in the hearts:
    • Compare the two verses;
      • Doctrine and Covenants 2:2 -- And he [Elijah] shall plant in the hearts of the children the promises made to the fathers, and the hearts of the children shall turn to their fathers.
        • Adds an additional phrase "he shall plant in the hearts of the children the promises made to the fathers."
        • D&C 2 reverses the order. The D&C verse has the children first. Instead of the father's heart turning, it is the children hearts turning to their fathers.
        • Moreover, it is the children, not the fathers, who are performing the action of turning. Whereas Malachi 4:6 has both the children and fathers turning their hearts -- in a reciprocal relationship.
        • Adds the word promises
      • Compare: Malachi 4:6 -- And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
    • Jospeh Smith, in regard to this verse, explain
      • The Bible says, "I will send you Elijah the Prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord; and he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to the fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse. Now, the word turn here should be translated bind, or seal. But what is the object of this important mission? or how is it to be fulfilled? The keys are to be delivered, the spirit of Elijah is to come, the Gospel to be established, the Saints of God gathered, Zion built up, and the Saints to come up as saviors on Mount Zion.
        • Notice that the fulfilling of this promise occurs not with the establishing of a temple, but when Zion is established. The result of Zion creates "saviors on Mount Zion."
      • Joseph Smith goes on to teach:
        • "But how are they to become saviors on Mount Zion? By building their temples, erecting their baptismal fonts, and going forth and receiving all the ordinances, baptisms, confirmations, washings, anointings, ordinations and sealing powers upon their heads, in behalf of all their progenitors who are dead, and redeem them that they may come forth in the first resurrection and be exalted to thrones of glory with them; and herein is the chain that binds the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the children to the fathers, which fulfills the mission of Elijah. And I would to God that this temple was now done, that we might go into it, and go to work and improve our time, and make use of the seals while they are on earth." (330)
        • The temple is not the end but the means by which we become "saviors on Mount Zion." The end goal is to not only perform ordinances on the behalf of our dead progenitors, but it is to also redeem them.
    • At another time, Jospeh Smith taught:
      • The world is reserved unto burning in the last days. He shall send Elijah the prophet, and he shall reveal the covenants of the fathers in relation to the children, and the covenants of the children in relation to the fathers. (TPJS, 321)
    The Coming of Elijah
    • As I've explained in another post, our conventional understanding of this verse may not be accurate. In Doctrine and Covenants 110, I will explain in depth the Elijah doctrine and how it's full scope and purpose may refer to future events.
    • However, one important fact is that Joseph Smith, after the events in Doctrine and Covenants 110, made additional references about Elijah. Those references were also pointing towards a future event. (e.g, Elijah shall...; instead of Elijah has...). This is important because he made this comments after Elijah had come to the Kirtland temple.
    Who Are The Fathers?
    • We often interpret fathers to refer to our deceased ancestors. But here's a challenge to that conventional thought -- or a least a wrinkle: What if fathers doesn't refer to earthly fathers, but to heavenly fathers?
    • Case in point: Abraham, in the book of Abraham, states that seek for the blessing of the fathers to receive greater happiness and peace and rest.
      • 2 And, finding there was greater happiness and peace and rest for me, I sought for the blessings of the fathers, and the right whereunto I should be ordained to administer the same
        • From this verse, we know when Abraham says that he seeks for the blessing of the fathers it is not referring to his biological father. How? Because his father was wicked. And being wicked, his father couldn't provide blessings of happiness. Thus the reference to fathers must refer to something else
    • Abraham also expresses a desire to become a "father."
      • ...having been myself a follower of righteousness, desiring also to be one who possessed great knowledge, and to be a greater follower of righteousness, and to possess a greater knowledge, and to be a father of many nations, a prince of peace, and desiring to receive instructions, and to keep the commandments of God, I became a rightful heir, a High Priest, holding the right belonging to the fathers.
        • From here, we see that the word father is also a title and a position.
    • On this point, Joseph Smith, again, taught:
      • "I wish you to understand this subject for it is important & if you will receive it this is the spirit of Elijah that we redeam (sic) our dead & connect ourselves with our fathers which are in heaven & seal up our dead to come forth in the first resurrection & here we want the power of Elijah to seal those who dwell on earth to those which dwell in heaven." (Words of Joseph Smith, p. 329)
    Questions to Ponder:
    • Why would angel Moroni use the word plant a promise instead of give or bestow? Why might that difference mean? When you plant something (say, a flower seed) what does that convey. Alma referred to the word of God like a seed planted in the heart? What's the relationship between Moroni's expression and Alma the Younger's?
    • Moroni states the planting is that of a promise. What might that promise be? Is there anywhere in the scriptures where promises are given to "fathers"?
    • Common interpretation is that this is referring to temple work. Perhaps this can be justified from the Malachi 4 translation. But if Moroni's version is referring to temple work, why are the children the one's turning their hearts? If the vicarious ordinances are being done for those who did not receive the gospel, wouldn't the hearts of the fathers have to turn to the children?

Commentary for Doctrine and Covenants: Section 1

For those interested in my plan for the commentary on Doctrine and Covenants, see here

Note: Although section 1 comes at the beginning of the Doctrine and Covenants, it comes later chronologically. Section 2 was recorded in September 21, 1823, whereas section 1 was received and recorded on November 1, 1831 during a "special conference of the elders of the Church." Moreover, after this revelation, Joseph Smith was criticized. Revelation 67 is the Lord's response to this criticism.

    Section 1

1 Hearken, O ye people of my church, saith the voice of him who dwells on high, and whose eyes are upon all men [the Lord addresses his revelation to the church]; yea, verily I say: Hearken ye people from afar; and ye that are upon the islands of the sea, listen together [the Lord also speaks to the entire earth]. 2 For [because] verily the voice of the Lord is unto all men, and there is none to escape; and there is no eye that shall not see, neither ear that shall not hear, neither heart that shall not be penetrated. [the church and people are to listen because Lord's voice for everyone to hear, and no one can avoid it hearing -- to some degree or another] 3 And the rebellious shall be pierced with much sorrow; for [because] their iniquities shall be spoken upon the housetops, and their secret acts shall be revealed. [the sorrow of the rebellious will come from having their works/acts revealed to all.] 4 And the voice of warning shall be unto all people, by the mouths of my disciples, whom I have chosen in these last days. 5 And they [the Lord's disciples of the last days] shall go forth and none shall stay them , for [because] I the Lord have commanded them. [nothing shall prevent the disciples from going forth because the Lord has given them authority]

6 Behold, this [what the Lord said in verses 1-5] is mine authority, and the authority of my servants, and my preface unto the book of my commandments [later become D&C], which I have given them to publish unto you, O inhabitants of the earth. [The Lord's authority is what he has spoken and declared -- it comes from his mouth alone] 7 Wherefore [Therefore], fear and tremble, O ye people [speaking to the world], for what I the Lord have decreed in them [His disciples] shall be fulfilled. [Question: Why should what the Lord decreed in his disciples cause the people fear?]  8 And verily I say unto you [speaking to the world], that they who go forth, bearing these tidings [not clear: could refer to the gospel or the book of commandments] unto the inhabitants of the earth, to them is power given to seal both on earth and in heaven, the unbelieving and rebellious; 9 Yea, verily, to seal them [the unbelieving and rebellious] up unto the day when the wrath of God shall be poured out upon the wicked without measure [i.e., day of judgment]— 10 Unto the day when the Lord shall come to recompense unto every man according to his work, and measure to every man according to the measure which he has measured to his fellow man. [verse 10 provides insight into what the Lord's judgment means -- it is when the Lord "awards" us the consequences/outcome of our actions]

11 Wherefore [Therefore, for this reason] the voice of the Lord is unto the ends of the earth, that [in order that] all that will hear may hear: 12 Prepare ye, prepare ye for that which is to come, for the Lord is nigh; 13 And the anger of the Lord is kindled, and his sword is bathed in heaven, and it shall fall upon the inhabitants of the earth. 14 And the arm of the Lord shall be revealed [likely referring to the Davidic Servant, who represents the power and strength of the Lord]; and the day cometh that they who will not hear the voice of the Lord, neither the voice of his servants, neither give heed to the words of the prophets and apostles, shall be cut off from among the people; 15 For they [those who are cut off] have strayed from mine ordinances, and have broken mine everlasting covenant; 16 They seek not the Lord to establish his righteousness, but every man walketh in his own way, and after the image of his own god, whose image is in the likeness of the world [our desire for the things of the world, whatever that may be, is our idol], and whose substance is that of an idol, which waxeth old and shall perish in Babylon, even Babylon the great, which shall fall.

    • If verse 14 is referring to the Davidic Servant, then it means that when he comes onto the scene, the Lord anger is about the fall upon the earth. And from Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord's anger simply means that he withdraws his spirit. (32 I, the Lord, am angry with the wicked; I am holding my Spirit from the inhabitants of the earth.) His withdrawing leaves a vacuum for Satan and his spirits to reign. This is why one reason why the end times will filled with tribulation -- Satan will have full power over this earth - see verse 35 below.
    • The reason why the the wicked get cut off by the Lord is for the following reasons:
      • They do not listen to the Lord's voice nor that of his servants.
      • They strayed from the Lord's ordinances
      • Broke His everlasting covenant
      • They seek not the Lord
      • And they walk after their "idol" -- the image of the world.

17 Wherefore, I the Lord, knowing the calamity which should come upon the inhabitants of the earth, called upon my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., and spake unto him from heaven, and gave him commandments; 18 And also gave commandments to others, that they should proclaim these things [not clear. Could refer to the Book of Commandments (D&C) or to what the Lord spoke in the above verses] unto the world; and all this that it might be fulfilled, which was written by the prophets— 19 The weak things of the world shall come forth and break down the mighty and strong ones, that man should not counsel his fellow man, neither trust in the arm of flesh— 20 But that every man might speak in the name of God the Lord, even the Savior of the world; 21 That faith also might increase in the earth; 22 That mine everlasting covenant might be established; 23 That the fulness of my gospel might be proclaimed by the weak and the simple unto the ends of the world, and before kings and rulers.

    • Because the Lord knows what will eventually happen to this earth due to the wickedness of the people, he called Jospeh Smith and gave him and others commandments in order for them to proclaim "these things" to the world so that the words of the prophets will be fulfilled, which said:
      • The weak things shall break the strong
      • Man should not trust in the arms of flesh
      • Everyone man speak in the name of God and the Lord (i.e., that all people might be prophets)
      • That faith might increase
      • That the Lord's everlasting covenant might be established
      • Fullness of His gospel proclaimed
    • Question: Have these results been reached? Has faith truly increased? Remember that Moroni said if we have faith, we can do miracles and be ministered by angels. Does this happen in our lives? If not, what does this say about our faith and the faith of the world? What does this say about the state of the church?

24 Behold, I am God and have spoken it; these commandments [referring to the D&C (formerly known as the Book of Commandments)] are of me [the Lord vouches for the revelations in D&C (those that were revealed to Joseph Smith up until 1831)], and were given unto my servants in their weakness, after the manner of their language, that they might come to understanding. [the Lord reveals things to us according to our understanding so that we may learn. He uses our language to do so] 25 And inasmuch as they [the Lord's servants] erred it might be made known; 26 And inasmuch as they sought wisdom they might be instructed; 27 And inasmuch as they sinned they might be chastened, that they might repent; 28 And inasmuch as they were humble they might be made strong, and blessed from on high, and receive knowledge from time to time.

    • The commandments in the D&C are given to the Lord's servants for the following reasons:
      • That they may come to an understanding
      • That they errors may be made known
      • That as they sought wisdom the would receive instruction
      • That as they sinned they would be chastened so that they might repent
      • That as they humbled themselves they would be taught from on high to receive knowledge

29 And after having received the record of the Nephites, yea, even my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., might have power to translate through the mercy of God, by the power of God, the Book of Mormon. [The Lord provides no allowance to any other statement other than that the Lord gave Joseph Smith power to translate the plates. Therefore, we must ignore some of the progressive theories about how it was translated.] 30 And also those to whom these commandments were given, [no other groups has the power to build up the church than those who have received the Lord's commandments -- i.e., the early church] might [subjunctive mood, meaning that the Lord hopes the early church brings about the church. It is no guarantee that the church would be brought out of darkness] have power to lay the foundation of this church, and to bring it forth out of obscurity and out of darkness, the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth, with which I, the Lord, am well pleased, speaking unto the church collectively and not individually— 31 For I the Lord cannot look upon sin with the least degree of allowance; 32 Nevertheless, he that repents and does the commandments of the Lord shall be forgiven; 33 And he that repents not, from him shall be taken even the light which he has received; for my Spirit shall not always strive with man, saith the Lord of Hosts.

34 And again, verily I say unto you, O inhabitants of the earth: I the Lord am willing to make these things [Not clear. Could refer to what the Lord said in verses 29-33, could refer to the entire section, or the D&C (Book of Commandments)] known unto all flesh; 35 For I am no respecter of persons, and will that all men shall know that the day speedily cometh; the hour is not yet, but is nigh at hand, when peace shall be taken from the earth, and the devil shall have power over his own dominion [earth].  36 And also the Lord shall have power over his saints [notice that the Lord's power is not over a region, but over a people], and shall reign in their midst, and shall come down in judgment upon Idumea, or the world.

    • Notice that when the devil has power over his domain, peace is removed. This is because the devil's by his nature is contentious. It's against his nature to promote any modicum of true peace. And remember, peace is more than just the absence of war. Furthermore, this taking away of peace is accompanied by the devil having dominion over the world.
    • What does the Lord mean by taking away peace? It's likely that the Lord is quoting Revelation 6, where John lays out the 7 seals that accompany the destruction of the world.
1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword. (Revelation 6)

      • Notice that in Rev 6, the removal of peace causes people to kill one another. If the Lord is referring to Revelation 6, then then the removal of peace is accompanied by mankind killing each other. And given that this statement from Rev 6 exists in a larger context, the removal of peace, as referred to by the Lord, has not happened -- yet.

37 Search these commandments, for [because] they are true and faithful [reliable and constant], and the prophecies and promises which are in them [D&C] shall all be fulfilled. 38 What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same. 39 For behold, and lo, the Lord is God, and the Spirit beareth record, and the record is true, and the truth abideth forever and ever. [because the Spirit bears record that the D&C is true, its commandments remain forever] Amen.

    • Verse 38: The Lord is not saying that whatever the prophet speaks is revelation. Instead he is saying that what he has declared in this revelation (section 1) will be fulfilled either by Him or his servants

Overview of Doctrine and Covenants Commentary

Given that my most popular posts were the commentaries on the Book of Mormon, I'm going to do the same thing with the Doctrine and Covenants. However, because producing those posts takes a lot of effort on my part and I'm not sure I'll have the time to give the same effort as I did with the Book of Mormon commentary, I've decided to try a new approach.

For the Doctrine and Covenants commentary, my plan is to provide the entire section (or section) and with annotations to the passages. I will also remove the versification format and instead put them in paragraph form. This format, I hope, will make it easier to track each idea as whole, instead of separately. Versification often results in people missing how ideas are connected to each other, which hinders their overall understanding. Although this means that some of the posts will be long, it will save me time as I only have to provide annotations and provide full explanation, but I can still discuss this important book of scripture.

Moreover, by setting up this way, I can also show my perspective when I read the scriptures -- showing how one can mine out more information than what's on the surface. I've written about these skills in my book, but I think modeling how this is done may be of benefit.

The D&C contains many gems that are worth discussing. I find it to be one of the most underutilized book, next to the Old Testament. This is a shame because it is the only book of scripture that features direct revelation from the Lord to His prophet. Thus unlike the other book of scriptures, where the revelation is quoted from the 3rd person perspective (e..g, The Lord told me...), the D&C is from the Lord himself (e.g., I the Lord say...). This feature gives a raw and unadulterated view (and voice) of the Lord.

Another important aspect of the D&C is that it's given to an infant church, who are having to learn along the way. This means that mistakes will be made and we will be able to learn from those mistakes, thereby serving to our benefit.

Last, the D&C contains some of the most important doctrines of our belief as well as laying out a more accurate nature of God. Statements by the Lord where he is "bound" by what we say, signal a shift from the teaching of mainline Christianity of a sovereign God who is above all. Rather, the D&C provides a different view of God -- one who is bound by law, not above it. Moreover, the later revelations of, especially around section 76 onward, contain important principles that are often neglected or passed over.

In addition to providing commentary of the Doctrine and Covenants, I will also be posting about other topics and I still have to complete the Kingdom of Heaven Is Within series, which I hope to wrap up in the next two months.
