Commentary for Doctrine and Covenants: Sections 18 and 19

Section 18

Background Information

Chronologically speaking, this revelation comes before section 15. It was given in the early days of June. And while some of the revelation is addressed specifically to OC, the revelation as whole is directed to OC, DW, and MH, calling them to find 12 disciples.

Section

1 Now, behold, because of the thing which you, my servant Oliver Cowdery, have desired to know of me, I give unto you these words: 2 Behold, I have manifested unto you, by my Spirit in many instances, that the things which you have written [referring to the Book of Mormon] are true; wherefore you know that they are true. 3 And if you know that they are true, behold, I give unto you a commandment, that you rely upon the things which are written [Book of Mormon]; 4 For in them [Book of Mormon] are all things written concerning the foundation of my church, my gospel, and my rock [OC is commanded to rely upon the truths concerning the building up of the Church of Christ as they are written in the Book of Mormon]. 5 Wherefore, if you shall build up my church, upon the foundation of my gospel and my rock, the gates of hell shall not prevail against you [in turn, the study of the Book of Mormon, will give us power over Satan].

  • Foundation of my Church: It was important for the Lord that the Church be founded upon correct principles, unique to the restoration, and not gathered from other sources. In turn, OC produced a document called the "Articles of the Church of Christ" to serve as guidance for organizing the church. This church would have priests, teachers, and elders.

6 Behold, the world is ripening in iniquity; and it must needs be that the children of men are stirred up unto repentance, both the Gentiles and also the house of Israel. 7 Wherefore, as thou hast been baptized by the hands of my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., according to that which I have commanded him, he hath fulfilled the thing which I commanded him. 8 And now, marvel not that I have called him unto mine own purpose, which purpose is known in me; wherefore, if he shall be diligent in keeping my commandments he shall be blessed unto eternal life; and his name is Joseph.

9 [Lord now addresses the three witnesses] And now, Oliver Cowdery, I speak unto you, and also unto David Whitmer, by the way of commandment; for, behold, I command all men everywhere to repent, and I speak unto you, even as unto Paul mine apostle, for you are called even with that same calling with which he was called. 10 Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God; 11 For, behold, the Lord your Redeemer suffered death in the flesh; wherefore he suffered the pain of all men, that all men might repent and come unto him.

12 And he hath risen again from the dead, that he might bring all men unto him, on conditions of repentance. 13 And how great is his joy in the soul that repenteth! 14 Wherefore, you are called to cry repentance unto this people. 15 And if it so be that you should labor all your days in crying repentance unto this people, and bring, save it be one soul unto me, how great shall be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father [joy comes from having people repent]! 16 And now, if your joy will be great with one soul that you have brought unto me into the kingdom of my Father, how great will be your joy if you should bring many souls unto me! 17 Behold, you have my gospel before you, and my rock, and my salvation.

  • Joy Comes From Calling People to Repentance: The account of the Sons of Mosiah shows the joy that comes from having people repent. As Ammon proclaims:
    • 35 Now have we not reason to rejoice? Yea, I say unto you, there never were men that had so great reason to rejoice as we, since the world began; yea, and my joy is carried away, even unto boasting in my God; for he has all power, all wisdom, and all understanding; he comprehendeth all things, and he is a merciful Being, even unto salvation, to those who will repent and believe on his name. 36 Now if this is boasting, even so will I boast; for this is my life and my light, my joy and my salvation, and my redemption from everlasting wo. Yea, blessed is the name of my God, who has been mindful of this people, who are a branch of the tree of Israel, and has been lost from its body in a strange land; yea, I say, blessed be the name of my God, who has been mindful of us, wanderers in a strange land. 37 Now my brethren, we see that God is mindful of every people, whatsoever land they may be in; yea, he numbereth his people, and his bowels of mercy are over all the earth. Now this is my joy, and my great thanksgiving; yea, and I will give thanks unto my God forever. Amen. (Alma 26)

18 Ask the Father in my name in faith, believing that you shall receive, and you shall have the Holy Ghost, which manifesteth all things which are expedient unto the children of men [the Holy Ghost teaches us what is necessary for us to learn, teaching us step-by-step as quick as we're able to bear]. 19 And if you have not faith, hope, and charity, you can do nothing. 20 Contend against no church, save it be the church of the devil. 21 Take upon you the name of Christ, and speak the truth in soberness. 22 And as many as repent and are baptized in my name, which is Jesus Christ, and endure to the end, the same shall be saved.

23 Behold, Jesus Christ is the name which is given of the Father, and there is none other name given whereby man can be saved; 24 Wherefore, all men must take upon them the name which is given of the Father, for in that name shall they be called at the last day; 25 Wherefore, if they know not the name by which they are called, they cannot have place in the kingdom of my Father.

  • To take up the Lord's name is to take upon His essence.
    • In ancient times, names were thought to contain the essence of the person. When a man received his name, he was considered complete. Moreover, the Old Testament associates the presence of the God by his name. Notably, ancient kings received new names at the time of their coronation. For instance, the pharaohs of Egypt received five "great names". Similarly, Sumerian, Hittite, and Iranian kings each received new names at the time of their coronation. In 2 Kings 23, the pharaoh, who appoints a vassal king to replace the Judahite king Jehoahaz, changes the vassal's name from Eliakim to Jehoiakim.
    • Likewise, the Nephites, in order to remember Nephi, called their subsequent kings by the name of Nephi (the people were desirous to retain in remembrance his name. And whoso should reign in his stead were called by the people, second Nephi, third Nephi, and so forth, according to the reigns of the kings... (see Jacob 1:11))
  • While Christ is the Savior of the world, we are expected to be mini-saviors, using our works to move the work of God along. The primary we do this is by calling people to repentance by the sharing of the principles they need to repent. By doing "what Jesus would do" we become like Him and thus "take upon His name."
    • The Lectures on Faith (lecture 7) summarizes the whole matter perfectly. Speaking of what is expected of followers of Jesus, it states: "The works that Jesus done they were to do, and greater works than those which he done among them should they do."

26 And now, behold, there are others who are called to declare my gospel, both unto Gentile and unto Jew; 27 Yea, even twelve; and the Twelve shall be my disciples, and they shall take upon them my name; and the Twelve are they who shall desire to take upon them my name with full purpose of heart. 28 And if they desire to take upon them my name with full purpose of heart, they are called to go into all the world to preach my gospel unto every creature. 29 And they are they who are ordained of me to baptize in my name, according to that which is written; 30 And you have that which is written before you; wherefore, you must perform it according to the words which are written.

31 And now I speak unto you, the Twelve—Behold, my grace is sufficient for you; you must walk uprightly before me and sin not. 32 And, behold, you [the three witnesses] are they who are ordained of me to ordain priests and teachers; to declare my gospel, according to the power of the Holy Ghost which is in you, and according to the callings and gifts of God unto men; 33 And I, Jesus Christ, your Lord and your God, have spoken it. 34 These words are not of men nor of man, but of me; wherefore, you shall testify they are of me and not of man; 35 For it is my voice which speaketh them unto you; for they are given by my Spirit unto you, and by my power you can read them one to another; and save it were by my power you could not have them; 36 Wherefore, you can testify that you have heard my voice, and know my words.

37 And now, behold, I give unto you, Oliver Cowdery, and also unto David Whitmer, that you shall search out the Twelve, who shall have the desires of which I have spoken; 38 And by their desires and their works you shall know them. 39 And when you have found them you shall show these things unto them. 40 And you shall fall down and worship the Father in my name. 41 And you must preach unto the world, saying: You must repent and be baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ; 42 For all men must repent and be baptized, and not only men, but women, and children who have arrived at the years of accountability.

  • In February 1825, when the twelve apostles were called, OC stated in the meeting, "our mind have been on a constant stretch to find who these Twelve were." The calling of the twelve occurred about 7 months after the events of Zion's Camp. Those who were called to the twelve were:
    • “1. Lyman E. Johnson
    • “2. Brigham Young
    • “3. Heber C. Kimball
    • “4. Orson Hyde
    • “5. David W. Patten
    • “6. Luke S. Johnson
    • “7. William E. M’Lellin
    • “8. John F. Boynton
    • “9. Orson Pratt
    • “10. William Smith
    • “11. Thomas B. Marsh
    • “12. Parley P. Pratt”

43 And now, after that you have received this [referring to section 18 revelation], you must keep my commandments in all things; 44 And by your [OC and DW] hands I will work a marvelous work among the children of men, unto the convincing of many of their sins, that they may come unto repentance, and that they may come unto the kingdom of my Father. 45 Wherefore, the blessings which I give unto you are above all things. 46 And after that you have received this, if you keep not my commandments you cannot be saved in the kingdom of my Father. 47 Behold, I, Jesus Christ, your Lord and your God, and your Redeemer, by the power of my Spirit have spoken it. Amen.

Section 19

Background Information

This revelation is directed to Martin Harris, who prior, pleaded with JS for the Lord to give him a commandments concerning whether he should mortgage his farm to pay for the printing of the Book of Mormon.

In June 1829, before what is now section 19 was given, JS and MH had arranged for E.B. Grandin to print the Book of Mormon. MH had negotied with Grandin about the price, but Gradnin would not begin printing until MH issued a promissory note, promising to "insure the payment for the printing." Gradin's price for printing 5,000 copies was $3,000, which required MH to mortgage his farm to pay for the cost. This was a huge ask for MH and he struggled with the decision. Joseph Knight recorded in his diary the discussion between MH and JS, nothing MH's worry about his property and the success of the Book of Mormon. In his words, Knight records:

“In the Spring of 1830 I went with my Team and took Joseph out to Manchester to his Father. When we was on our way he told me that there must be a Church formed But did not tell when. Now when we got near to his fathers we saw a man some Eighty Rods Before us run acros the street with a Bundle in his hand. ‘There,’ says Joseph, ‘there is Martin going a Cros the road with some thing in his hand.’ Says I, ‘how Could you know him so far? Says he, ‘I Believe it is him,’ and when we Came up it was Martin with a Bunch of morman Books. He Came to us and after Compliments he says, ‘The Books will not sell for no Body wants them.’ Joseph says, ‘I think they will sell well.’ Says he, ‘I want a Commandment.’ ‘Why,’ says Joseph, ‘fullfill what you have got.’ ‘But,’ says he, ‘I must have a Commandment.’ Joseph put him off. But he insisted three or four times he must have a Commandment.

“We went home to his fathers and Martin with us. Martin stayed at his Fathers and slept in a Bed on the flor with me. Martin awoke me in the nite and asked me if I felt any thing on the Bed. I told him no. Says I, ‘Did you?’ ‘Yes, I felt some thing as Big as a grat Dog Sprang upon my Brest.’ Says I, ‘Was you not mistekened.’ ‘No,’ says he. ‘It was so.’ I Sprang up and felt, But I Could see nor feal nothing. In the morning he got up and said he must have a Commandment to Joseph and went home. And along in the after part of the Day Joseph and Oliver Received a Commandmant which is in Book of Covenants Page 174 [D&C 19]”

What follows is the Lord's command to MH regarding his mortgaging of his farm.

Section

1 I am Alpha and Omega, Christ the Lord; yea, even I am he, the beginning and the end, the Redeemer of the world. 2 I, having accomplished and finished the will of him whose I am, even the Father, concerning me—having done this [the atonement] that I might subdue all things unto myself— 3 Retaining all power , even to the destroying of Satan and his works at the end of the world, and the last great day of judgment [there's something about the atonement that allows Christ to subdue everything, which in turn gives him power to destroy Satan and his works at the end of the world, for more study, see Mosiah 15: 7-9], which [referring to judgment at the end of the world] I shall pass upon the inhabitants thereof, judging every man according to his works and the deeds which he hath done [we are not judged based on our loyalty to the a religious institution, but the words we perform on this earth].

  • Interesting that the Lord begins the revelation to MH in this manner. It seems that the Lord is bearing his bona fides to MH for the purpose of proving that He is reliable.

4 And surely every man must repent or suffer [we have two options on this earth -- repent or suffer], for I, God, am endless. 5 Wherefore, I revoke not the judgments which I shall pass [at the end of the world], but woes shall go forth, weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth, yea, to those who are found on my left hand [the hand of justice/judgment]. 6 Nevertheless, it is not written that there shall be no end to this torment, but it is written endless torment.

  • In reiterating His commandment to MH to mortgage his farm, the Lord offers greater context as to the significance of keeping His commandments. Those who disobey the Lord must suffer as God suffered. MH appears to be facing that possibility. This is especially true given that he had seen the plates and an angel, but was not obeying the Lord. Nevertheless, the Lord explain that the suffering is not endless.

7 Again, it is written eternal damnation; wherefore it is more express than other scriptures, that it might work upon the hearts of the children of men, altogether for my name’s glory. 8 Wherefore, I will explain unto you this mystery [the meaning of eternal damnation], for it is meet [proper] unto you to know even as mine apostles. 9 I speak unto you [seems to refer to other besides MH] that are chosen in this thing, even as one, that you may enter into my rest. 10 For, behold, the mystery of godliness, how great is it! For, behold, I am endless, and the punishment which is given from my hand is endless punishment, for Endless is my name. Wherefore— 11 Eternal punishment is God’s punishment. 12 Endless punishment is God’s punishment.

  • Through JS (as seer and revelator), we learn a mystery about God's punishment that has been lost. Here, God explains that punishment (or hell) does not last forever. To reach this conclusion, we must read the terms "eternal" and "endless" not as nouns, but as proper nouns, that is "eternal" and "endless" are names for God. In other words, Eternal punishment is "Eternal's punishment". Endless punishment is "Endless' punishment." What this ultimately means is that punishment is God's punishment and that the punishment of the sinner will last long enough until the person has changed.
    • To better understand what this looks like, consider what James E. Talmage has said about this subject:
      • During this hundred years many other great truths not known before, have been declared to the people, and one of the greatest is that to hell there is an exit as well as an entrance. Hell is no place to which a vindictive judge sends prisoners to suffer and to be punished principally for his glory; but it is a place prepared for the teaching, the disciplining of those who failed to learn here upon the earth what they should have learned. True, we read of everlasting punishment, unending suffering, eternal damnation. That is a direful expression; but in his mercy the Lord has made plain what those words mean. “Eternal punishment,” he says, is God’s punishment, for he is eternal; and that condition or state or possibility will ever exist for the sinner who deserves and really needs such condemnation; but this does not mean that the individual sufferer or sinner is to be eternally and everlastingly made to endure and suffer. No man will be kept in hell longer than is necessary to bring him to a fitness for something better. When he reaches that stage the prison doors will open and there will be rejoicing among the hosts who welcome him into a better state. The Lord has not abated in the least what he has said in earlier dispensations concerning the operation of his law and his gospel, but he has made clear unto us his goodness and mercy through it all, for it is his glory and his work to bring about the immortality and eternal life of man. -- Elder James E. Talmage, Conference Report, April 1930, 97
    • This concept aligns with Peter's statement about where Christ went after his resurrection:
      • 18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison 20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. (1 Peter 3)
        • Christ visited those who were disobedient in Noah's day to relieve them of their punishment by teaching them the gospel, so they would have a chance to repent and thereby reduce their suffering.
    • Ultimately, what this revelation reveals is that God's punishment is restorative, not vindictive. God does not punish people because he is mad. People are punished because they violated the laws of justice and thus must receive of its consequences. But once the person repents, the punishment ceases. God's intent is to teach people His ways -- we are the only ones standing in His way.
  • But why the use of additional names? God explain the reason in verse 7. God uses these terms as a way to "work upon the hearts of the children of men." I interpret this to mean that God uses these terms (endless and eternal) as a tactic to wake sinners up to the reality of what awaits them if they don't repent. It's a scare tactic of sorts, which is often what's required to "stir" people unto repentance.

13 Wherefore, I command you [MH] to repent, and keep the commandments which you have received [to mortgage his farm] by the hand of my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., in my name; 14 And it is by my almighty power that you [MH] have received them; 15 Therefore I command you [MH] to repent—repent, lest I smite you by the rod of my mouth, and by my wrath, and by my anger, and your sufferings be sore—how sore you know not, how exquisite you know not, yea, how hard to bear you know not [MH can either suffering through is sacrifice or suffer through his punishment, which suffering is worse than he could imagine].

16 For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent; 17 But if they would not repent they must suffer even as I; 18 Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit—and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink— 19 Nevertheless, glory be to the Father [Christ suffered in order to glorify God], and I partook and finished my preparations unto the children of men.

20 Wherefore, I command [again, this is the second time in this revelation where the Lord has commanded MH to repent, thereby emphasizing the severity of MH's transgression] you again to repent, lest I humble you with my almighty power; and that you confess your sins, lest you suffer these punishments of which I have spoken, of which in the smallest, yea, even in the least degree you have tasted at the time I withdrew my Spirit [MH's delay in mortgaging his farm resulted in him losing the Spirit, which caused him suffering]. 21 And I command you that you preach naught but repentance, and show not these things [referring to section 19] unto the world until it is wisdom in me. 22 For they [the world] cannot bear meat [deeper doctrines] now, but milk they must receive [the simpler stuff]; wherefore, they must not know these things, lest they perish. 23 Learn of me, and listen to my words; walk in the meekness of my Spirit, and you shall have peace in me. 24 I am Jesus Christ; I came by the will of the Father, and I do his will.

25 And again, I command thee that thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife; nor seek thy neighbor’s life. 26 And again, I command thee that thou shalt not covet thine own property, but impart it freely to the printing of the Book of Mormon, which contains the truth and the word of God— 27 Which is my word to the Gentile, that soon it may go to the Jew, of whom the Lamanites are a remnant, that they may believe the gospel, and look not for a Messiah to come who has already come. 28 And again, I command thee that thou shalt pray vocally as well as in thy heart; yea, before the world as well as in secret, in public as well as in private.

  • Coveting: It appears that MH's transgression was due to his valuing His property over the Lord. But lest we view MH harshly, we should ask if we are like MH? Are there things that we value of God?
  • The sad fact of the matter is that MH's mortgaging of his farm was a sacrifice. Although MH relented and mortgaged his farm, the Book of Mormon, as a result of a boycott in Palmyra, did not sell enough copies for him to make up the difference. As a result, he lost the farm and his family, as his wife left with his children, and "never again returned to live with Martin Harris." Therefore, as we read this accounts, we should do so with humility and perspective. MH gave up everything. Are we willing to do the same?
    • Often when we read the scriptures, we like to see ourselves as the righteous figures, instead of the wicked ones. But we'd learn more about ourselves if we read ourselves as the villain, instead of the hero.

29 And thou shalt declare glad tidings, yea, publish it upon the mountains, and upon every high place, and among every people that thou shalt be permitted to see. 30 And thou shalt do it with all humility, trusting in me, reviling not against revilers. 31 And of tenets thou shalt not talk, but thou shalt declare repentance and faith on the Savior, and remission of sins by baptism, and by fire, yea, even the Holy Ghost. 32 Behold, this is a great and the last commandment which I shall give unto you concerning this matter; for this shall suffice for thy daily walk, even unto the end of thy life.

33 And misery thou shalt receive if thou wilt slight these counsels [command to mortgage his farm], yea, even the destruction of thyself and property [seems that either MH can give up his property freely or the Lord will take it from him]. 34 Impart a portion of thy property, yea, even part of thy lands, and all save the support of thy family. 35 Pay the debt thou hast contracted with the printer. Release thyself from bondage. 36 Leave thy house and home, except when thou shalt desire to see thy family; 37 And speak freely to all; yea, preach, exhort, declare the truth, even with a loud voice, with a sound of rejoicing, crying—Hosanna, hosanna, blessed be the name of the Lord God!

38 Pray always, and I will pour out my Spirit upon you, and great shall be your blessing—yea, even more than if you should obtain treasures of earth and corruptibleness to the extent thereof [the Lord's assures MH that he has more to receive through he Spirit, than through earthly treasures]. 39 Behold, canst thou read this without rejoicing and lifting up thy heart for gladness? 40 Or canst thou run about longer as a blind guide? 41 Or canst thou be humble and meek, and conduct thyself wisely before me? Yea, come unto me thy Savior. Amen.

Commentary for the Doctrine and Covenants: Section 14-17

Sections 14

Background Information

This revelation is directed to David Whitmer after he helped JS and OC move to Peter Whitmer's house in Fayette, NY to complete the translation of the Book of Mormon. DW learned about JS in the fall of 1828 where word spread around the Palmyra region of the gold plates JS had obtained. DW discussed the gossip with OC, who, at the time, was acquitted with the Smith family. In their discussion, OC told DW that "“there must be some truth in the story of the plates, and that he intended to investigate the matter.” Later OC informed DW that he had plans to go to Harmony to see JS about the plates. OC later sent a letter to DW requesting assistance in moving JS and OC to Fayette.

Notably, it appears they the Whitmers become supporters of JS based on divine manifestations they received while helping the prophet move to Fayette. On the journey to Fayette, DW (along with JS and OC) encountered a “pleasant, nice looking old man” who JS later identified was a angel transporting the plates. Moreover, DW recalled that soon after he arrived in in Fayette, his mother, Mary Whitemer, was met "by the same old man" who showed her the plates.

Reagarding DW and Peter Whitmer Jr, Joseph Smith remarked that “David, John, and Peter Whitmer Jr became our zealous friends and assistants in the work; And being anxious to know their respective duties, and having desired with much earnestness that I should enquire of the Lord concerning them, I did so, through the means of the Urim and Thummin and obtained for them in succession the folowing Revelations. The "revelations" refer to this revelation (section 14) and the June 1829 revelation (section 15) to John Whitmer and Peter Whitmer Jr.

Section

1 A great and marvelous work is about to come forth unto the children of men. 2 Behold, I am God; give heed to my word, which is quick and powerful, sharper than a two-edged sword, to the dividing asunder of both joints and marrow; therefore give heed unto my word. 3 Behold, the field is white already to harvest; therefore, whoso desireth to reap let him thrust in his sickle with his might, and reap while the day lasts, that he may treasure up for his soul everlasting salvation in the kingdom of God. 4 Yea, whosoever will thrust in his sickle and reap, the same is called of God. 5 Therefore, if you will ask of me you shall receive; if you will knock it shall be opened unto you.

6 Seek to bring forth and establish my Zion [the Lord's goal is always to establish Zion. Having a well structured church organization is good, but Zion is the end goal, which hasn't happened yet] Keep my commandments in all things. 7 And, if you keep my commandments and endure to the end you shall have eternal life, which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God. 8 And it shall come to pass, that if you shall ask the Father in my name, in faith believing, you shall receive the Holy Ghost, which giveth utterance, that you may stand as a witness of the things of which you shall both hear and see, and also that you may declare repentance unto this generation.

  • Conditions:
    • In verses 7-8, we learn of conditions DW is to keep to receive the HG: 1) ask the Father in the name of Christ; 2) believing that he will receive (i.e., faith believing).
  • Result of Having the Holy Ghost:
    • If DW obeys the conditions, then he will receive the Holy Ghost. And the purpose of the Holy Ghost is give utterance (allow DW to speak inspired words) so that DW can stand as a witness AND declare repentance.
    • Thus the Holy Ghost is a causal factor in allowing DW to bear witness (of the things that he will see and hear) and declare repentance. It follows then that if he didn't receive the Holy Ghost he couldn't do those things. If that's true for him, what about us? Moreover, is it the Holy Ghost which gives DW power to see and hear things from the Lord.

9 Behold, I am Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, who created the heavens and the earth, a light which cannot be hid in darkness [the light of the Savior is too "bright" for the darkness to cover it]; 10 Wherefore, I must bring forth the fulness of my gospel from the Gentiles unto the house of Israel. 11 And behold, thou art David, and thou art called [DW's "calling" at this time was to assist JS in the translation process] to assist; which thing if ye do, and are faithful, ye shall be blessed both spiritually and temporally [if DW assists JS in the translation process, he will be blessed temporally and spiritually], and great shall be your reward. Amen.

Section 15

Background Information

Both this section and section 16 were given to John and Peter Whitmer after they were baptized. The two revelations were identical but addressed to each man separately. When John Whitmer compiled the revelations, he included his first (section 15) and then Peter Jr's second, suggesting that the revelations were received in that order.

Regarding section 15 and 16, JS remarked that John and Peter Jr. were "“anxious to know their respective duties [and] desired with much earnestness that I [JS] should enquire of the Lord concerning them."

Section

1 Hearken, my servant John, and listen to the words of Jesus Christ, your Lord and your Redeemer. 2 For behold, I speak unto you with sharpness and with power, for mine arm is over all the earth. 3 And I will tell you that which no man knoweth save me and thee alone— 4 For many times you have desired of me to know that which would be of the most worth unto you. 5 Behold, blessed are you for this thing, and for speaking my words which I have given you according to my commandments. 6 And now, behold, I say unto you, that the thing which will be of the most worth unto you will be to declare repentance unto this people, that you may bring souls unto me, that you may rest with them in the kingdom of my Father. Amen.

Section 16

1 Hearken, my servant Peter, and listen to the words of Jesus Christ, your Lord and your Redeemer. 2 For behold, I speak unto you with sharpness and with power, for mine arm is over all the earth. 3 And I will tell you that which no man knoweth save me and thee alone— 4 For many times you have desired of me to know that which would be of the most worth unto you. 5 Behold, blessed are you for this thing, and for speaking my words which I have given unto you according to my commandments. 6 And now, behold, I say unto you, that the thing which will be of the most worth unto you will be to declare repentance unto this people, that you may bring souls unto me, that you may rest with them in the kingdom of my Father. Amen.

Section 17

Background Information

This revelation was given in response to a passage in the Book of Mormon and a JS revelation that "promised that three witnesses would testify of the gold plates." This revelation was given in Fayette, New York. Remarking about this occasion, JS recorded that it was "not many days" after section 17 was given that he, OC, DW, and MH, "agreed to retire into the woods, and try to obtain by fervent and humble prayer, the fulfillment of the promises give in this revelation; they they should have a view of the plates."

1 Behold, I say unto you [OC, MH, HW], that you must rely upon my word [promise], which if you do with full purpose of heart, you shall have a view of the plates, and also of the breastplate, the sword of Laban, the Urim and Thummim, which were given to the brother of Jared upon the mount, when he talked with the Lord face to face, and the miraculous directors which were given to Lehi while in the wilderness, on the borders of the Red Sea. 2 And it is by your faith that you shall obtain a view of them [those items mentioned by the Lord], even by that faith which was had by the prophets of old.

  • Faith is Exercised By Promises: In verse 1, the Lord gives OC, MH, and DW a promise upon which they exercise their faith. If they rely on His word [promise] with full purpose of heart, they will see the plates, breastplate, sword of Laban, and the Liahona (the "miraculous directors"). This is the pattern exercised by men of faith. For instance, Abraham was given a promise of a son and it was that promise that he exercised faith in. The Lord gave him an assurance. Abraham made the choice to trust that the Lord could provide despite his wife being beyond child bearing aga

3 And after that you have obtained faith, and have seen them with your eyes, you shall testify of them, by the power of God; 4 And this you shall do that my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., may not be destroyed, that I may bring about my righteous purposes unto the children of men in this work [the testimony will serve to buttress the claim made by JS about the Book of Mormon]. 5 And ye shall testify that you have seen them, even as my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., has seen them; for it is by my power that he has seen them, and it is because he had faith [Lord suggests that if JS did not have faith in the Lord, he could not have seen the plates]. 6 And he has translated the book, even that part which I have commanded him, and as your Lord and your God liveth it is true.

7 Wherefore, you have received the same power [re: the same power JS received], and the same faith, and the same gift like unto him [gift of translation? or a different gift? perhaps the Lord is referring to the gift of seeing the plates]; 8 And if you do these last commandments of mine [to testify of what they've seen?], which I have given you, the gates of hell shall not prevail against you; for my grace is sufficient for you, and you shall be lifted up at the last day. 9 And I, Jesus Christ, your Lord and your God, have spoken it unto you, that I might bring about my righteous purposes unto the children of men. Amen.

Commentary for Doctrine and Covenants: Sections 12-13

Section 12

Background Information

This revelation is addressed to Joseph Knight Sr. The Knight family is an historic one and have a significant pedigree within the history of the church. It was Joseph Knight Sr who employed JS as a day laborer and who loned JS his horse to see Emma Hales (later Emma Smith).

The Knight family met JS through Knight's businesses partner, Josiah Stowell. Stowell hired JS to find a mine that he was convinced was hidden up by the Issac Hale home. JS later reached out the the Knight family to "relieve his family's debts."

On commenting about JS' relationship with the Knight family, Joseph Knight Jr remarked "“Joseph and I worked and slept together: my Father said Joseph was the best hand he ever hired, we found him a boy of truth, he was about 21 years of age." Newel Knight also remarked that he found JS to be of "noble deportment" and that JS "faithfulness his kind address could not fail to gain the esteem of those who had the pleasure of his acquaintance." Eventually JS later his vision experience. According to Joseph Knight Jr, his father believed JS' words.

On September 1827, Knight was at Smith's home when JS retrieved the plates. Later that year the Knight family helped JS and Emma with financial assistance as they had fallen on hard times. Moreover, JS supported JS enough that he was able to recommence the translation of the lost manuscript.

Joseph Knight continued to provide support to JS during the translation process. Knight's son, Joseph Knight Jr., wrote how his father and him "often went to see [JS] and carry him something live upon. The Knight family also supplied either in part of whole a fifty-dollar payment for a thirteen-and-half-acre lot that JS bought from his father in law, Issac Hale.  And when JS and OC were running low on provisions

But beside the financial support, the Knight family serve as an model for a faith who were steadfast in the Lord. Although the Knight's were not wealthy, they had enough to live a comfortable life. Newel Knight described his father as "not rich yet [he] possessed enough of this worlds good to secure to himself and family the necessaries and comforts of life." But despite this financial security, the Knight family experienced trials. Part of this was due to Knight's generosity, which in no small part allowed the translation of the gold plates to continue unabated.

But other causes of their suffering was due to the persecution members of the church experienced. The mob's persecution of the Knight family was so bad that Knight, his wife and daughter fled their home to accompany JS to Kirtland. The sons stayed behind to help the remaining members of the Colesville Saints. Later in their journey to Jackson County, Missouri, Knight's wife got sick and later died in Missouri.

Nevertheless, despite their trials and sufferings, the Knight family never wavered in their. Speaking of Joseph Knight Sr., JS wrote:

“[He] was among the number of the first to administer to my necessities. … For fifteen years he has been faithful and true, and even-handed and exemplary, and virtuous and kind, never deviating from the right hand or to the left. Behold, he is a righteous man, may God Almighty lengthen out the old man’s days; and may his trembling, tortured, and broken body be renewed, … and it shall be said of him, by the sons of Zion, while there is one of them remaining, that this man was a faithful man in Israel.”

Of Father Knight's sons, the prophet declared: " “There are his sons, Newel Knight and Joseph Knight, Jun., whose names I record in the Book of the Law of the Lord with unspeakable delight, for they are my friends.”

As one historian put it, the Knights "left their farms, their fortunes, and the graves of their loved ones behind as they followed the gospel call."

Section

1 A great and marvelous work is about to come forth among the children of men. 2 Behold, I am God; give heed to my word, which is quick and powerful, sharper than a two-edged sword, to the dividing asunder of both joints and marrow; therefore, give heed unto my word.

5 Therefore, if you [Joseph Knight Sr] will ask of me you shall receive; if you will knock it shall be opened unto you.

6 Now, as you have asked, behold, I say unto you, keep my commandments, and seek to bring forth and establish the cause of Zion. 7 Behold, I speak unto you, and also to all those who have desires to bring forth and establish this work; 8 And no one can assist in this work except he shall be humble and full of love, having faith, hope, and charity, being temperate in all things, whatsoever shall be entrusted to his care. 9 Behold, I am the light and the life of the world, that speak these words, therefore give heed with your might, and then you are called. Amen.

Section 13

Section

1 Upon you my fellow servants, in the name of Messiah I confer the Priesthood of Aaron, which holds the keys of the ministering of angels, and of the gospel of repentance, and of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; and this shall never be taken again from the earth, until the sons of Levi do offer again an offering unto the Lord in righteousness.

  • Right Under the Priesthood of Aaron: Notice that one of the keys of the Aaronic priesthood is that of the ministering of angels. What does this mean? It means that those who hold the Aaronic priesthood (not Melchizedek) are privileged to be ministered by angels. The requirement, as taught by Moroni, is to have faith and firm mind in every form of godliness.
  • Son of Levi: Before the Old Jerusalem can be established, the sons of Levi must offer a righteous offering to the Lord. In Malachi 3, The Lord tells Malachi about future events regarding the establishing of the covenant and purifying the sons of Levi.
    • 1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.
      • Here, the Lord foretells of a messenger (of the covenant) that will prepare the way before Him. The preparing the way for the Lord involves building a temple. Just like John the Baptist was forerunner, so, too, will there be forerunner before Christ comes.
    • 2 But who may abide the day of his [the messenger's] coming? and who shall stand when he [the messenger] appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap. 3 And he [the messenger] shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.
      • As shown in the annotations, the messenger prepares the way by purifying the sons of Levi so that they may offer a sacrifice "unto the Lord... in righteousness."
      • The purification of the Levites is important when it comes to end-time events, and is particularly significant when it comes to the redemption of Jerusalem. The redemption of Jerusalem is significant because it's established signals the gathering of the remaining house of Israel from the four quarters of the earth.
        • 11 Ye remember that I spake unto you, and said that when the words of Isaiah should be fulfilled...And verily, verily, I say unto you, that when they shall be fulfilled then is the fulfilling of the covenant which the Father hath made unto his people, O house of Israel. 13 And then [once the covenant is established] shall the remnants, which shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the earth, be gathered in from the east and from the west, and from the south and from the north; and they shall be brought to the knowledge of the Lord their God, who hath redeemed them. (3 Nephi 20)
      • The reason why the sons of Levi are required to make a righteous offering to the Lord is because it was the tribe of Levi who were the priests of the temple, participating in its rites. However, instead of remaining faithful to the Lord, the priests failed in their duties. To get a taste of the Lord's stance toward their abdication of duties, the Lord says
        • 1 And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you. 2 If ye [the priests] will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the Lord of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart. 3 Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn feasts; and one shall take you away with it. 4 And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith the Lord of hosts.
      • The Lord goes on to explain what he expected of them and what they had become
        • 7 For the priest’s lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts. 8 But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the Lord of hosts. 9 Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.
      • Thus the role of Levitical priests are important. And in the full restoration of things -- which includes the gathering of Israel. The descendants of Levi must rectify the mistakes of their ancestors through their offering of a righteous sacrifice. What this offering means is not clear. It could refer to a personal offering (that is, a personal sacrifice of some sort) and/or it could refer to an animal sacrifice (which is referred to as a offering under the Mosaic law). That is, the sons of Levi purify themselves enough to be able to offering an animal sacrifice. And yes, animal sacrifices will come back
        • it is generally supposed that Sacrifice was entirely done away when the great sacrifice was offered up—and that there will be no necessity for the ordinance of Sacrifice in future, but those who assert this, are certainly not acquainted with the duties, privileges and authority of the priesthood. or with the prophets The offering of Sacrifice has ever been connected and forms a part of the duties of the priesthood. It began with the priesthood and will be continued until after the coming of Christ from generation to generation—We frequently have mention made of the offering of Sacrifice by the servants of the most high in ancient days prior to the law of moses, which ordinances will be continued when the priesthood is restored with all its authority power and blessings. Elijah was the last prophet that held the keys of this priesthood, and who will, before the last dispensation, restore the authority and delive[r] the Keys of this priesthood in order that all the ordinances may be attended to in righteousness.'' ("Words of Joseph Smith", 5 Oct 1840)
          • Note: JS says that Elijah will restore the authority and keys of sacrifice (since animal sacrifice is part of the priesthood). Since we don't practice animal sacrifice, the full coming of Elijah has yet to be realized.
      • One of the messenger of the covenant's (from Malachi 3) role is to refine the sons of Levi so they can make a righteous sacrifice to the Lord in order for them to be accepted and serve as priests of the Jerusalem temple.

Commentary for Doctrine and Covenants: Sections 10-11

Section 10

Background Information

Chronologically this revelation likely comes after section 6, although this is hard to know for certain because the different extant manuscripts all have different dates.  After having lost the plates for a season, JS resumed translation by March 1829. OC began work as JS' scribe on April 5th. JS and OC picked up where JS and Martin Harris left of, which was in the book of Mosiah. As JS and OC approached the end of the Book of Mormon, they were unsure what to do with the lost portion -- should they retranslate it or not.

In section 10, the Lord tells them not to and explains the reasons. The Lord, moreover, provides JS and OC a substitute record which were "engraven upon the plates of Nephi", which covered the same period as the lost manuscripts, albeit more truncated.

Section

1 Now, behold, I say unto you, that because you delivered up those writings which you had power given unto you to translate by the means of the Urim and Thummim, into the hands of a wicked man, you have lost them. 2 And you also lost your gift at the same time, and your mind became darkened [disobedience causes our minds to darken, because to be disobedient is to reject truth and the rejection of truth creates a vacuum for darkness to enter]. 3 Nevertheless, it [Urim and Thummim] is now restored unto you again; therefore see that you are faithful and continue on unto the finishing of the remainder of the work of translation as you have begun. 4 Do not run faster or labor more than you have strength and means provided to enable you to translate; but be diligent unto the end. 5 Pray always, that you may come off conqueror; yea, that you may conquer Satan, and that you may escape the hands of the servants of Satan that do uphold his work [verses 4-5 are the Lord instructions for how JS can finish the translation: 1) be moderate and 2) pray so that he can receive help from the Lord].

6 Behold, they [servants of Satan -- those seeking to alter the lost manuscript] have sought to destroy you; yea, even the man in whom you have trusted [Martin Harris?] has sought to destroy you. [the Lord explains how/clarifies what he means when he said the man (likely MH) sought to destroy him] 7 And for this cause [for this reason] I said that he is a wicked man, for [because] he has sought to take away the things wherewith you have been entrusted; and he has also sought to destroy your gift [how?]. 8 And because you have delivered the writings into his hands, behold, wicked men have taken them from you. 9 Therefore, you have delivered them up, yea, that which was sacred, unto wickedness.

10 And, behold, Satan hath put it into their hearts to alter the words which you have caused to be written, or which you have translated, which have gone out of your hands. 11 And behold, I say unto you, that because they have altered the words, they read contrary from that which you translated and caused to be written; 12 And, on this wise, the devil has sought to lay a cunning plan, that he may destroy this work; 13 For he hath put into their hearts to do this, that by lying [by intentionally altering the manuscript] they may say they have caught you in the words which you have pretended to translate [they will lie to "catch" JS in a lie].

14 Verily, I say unto you, that I will not suffer that Satan shall accomplish his evil design in this thing. 15 For behold, he has put it into their hearts to get thee to tempt the Lord thy God, in asking to translate it over again. 16 And then, behold, they say and think in their hearts—We will see if God has given him power to translate; if so, he will also give him power again; 17 And if God giveth him power again, or if he translates again, or, in other words, if he bringeth forth the same words, behold, we have the same with us, and we have altered them; 18 Therefore they will not agree, and we will say that he has lied in his words, and that he has no gift, and that he has no power; 19 Therefore we will destroy him, and also the work; and we will do this that we may not be ashamed in the end, and that we may get glory of the world [The reason Satan has power of these men hearts is because they seek for glory from the world. This impure desire opened up the door for Satan to tempt them].

20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that Satan has great hold upon their hearts; he stirreth them up [in anger] to iniquity against that which is good; 21 And their hearts are corrupt, and full of wickedness and abominations; and they love darkness rather than light, because their deeds are evil [evil deeds/works attract darkness]; therefore they will not ask of me [because they are in darkness, they can't comprehend the light]. 22 Satan stirreth them up, that he may lead their souls to destruction. 23 And thus he has laid a cunning plan, thinking to destroy the work of God; but I will require this at their hands, and it shall turn to their shame and condemnation in the day of judgment. 24 Yea, he stirreth up their hearts to anger against this work. 25 Yea, he [Satan] saith unto them [the men altering the manuscript]: Deceive and lie in wait to catch, that ye may destroy; behold, this is no harm. And thus he flattereth them, and telleth them that it is no sin to lie that they may catch a man in a lie, that they may destroy him. 26 And thus he flattereth them, and leadeth them along until he draggeth their souls down to hell; and thus he causeth them to catch themselves in their own snare. 27 And thus he goeth up and down, to and fro in the earth, seeking to destroy the souls of men.

  • Appeal to Pride: Satan's tactic with these men was subtle. Instead of appealing to their wickedness, he appeals to their pride (which CS Lewis refers to as the "insidious kind"). That is, he causes the men to believe that what they are doing is not evil because they are exposing a liar. Thus although what the men are doing is objectively evil, the men don't realize they are "being" evil.
    • On this point, I heard a former US Army Ranger, who fought in Afghanistan, say "I've seen a lot of good people and a lot of evil people, and none of them thought they were wrong." CS Lewis echoed a similar statement, when he said that wickedness is the "pursuit of some good in the wrong way." The men seeking to alter the manuscript likely believed that they were justified in what they were doing. They believed JS was a liar and sought to expose him (the good -- as we should want liars exposed) but they went about it in the wrong way (altering the manuscript)
    • We should take this point to heart and ask ourselves: are we pursuing something that is good but in the wrong way?
      • Seeking for financial success to support one's family and help others (the good) but being unethical in earning the money and/or ignoring family responsibilities (the wrong way)
      • Believing that a person's opinion is wrong and you want to correct him (the good) but instead of addressing his arguments, you attack the person's character (the wrong way)
      • Believing that a certain political view (the good) but refusing to take with those who disagree with you (the wrong way)
      • Seeking for salvation (the good) but spending more focus on the attending church instead of helping others (the wrong way)
    • Each of these pursuits are good. And that is where Satan can trick us. He can convince us our "wrong way" of pursuing the good is not evil or wicked because we are pursuing something good. Thus we rationalize our wicked behavior because we are aiming for the good.

28 Verily, verily, I say unto you, wo be unto him that lieth to deceive because he supposeth that another lieth to deceive, for such are not exempt from the justice of God 29 Now, behold, they have altered these words, because Satan saith unto them: He hath deceived you—and thus he flattereth them away to do iniquity, to get thee to tempt the Lord thy God [the Lord explains that lying to catch someone else you think is lying is not justifiable].

30 Behold, I say unto you, that you shall not translate again those words [the lost manuscript/book of Lehi] which have gone forth out of your hands; 31 For, behold, they [the wicked men] shall not accomplish their evil designs in lying against those words. For, behold, if you should bring forth the same words they will say that you have lied and that you have pretended to translate, but that you have contradicted yourself. 32 And, behold, they will publish this, and Satan will harden the hearts of the people to stir them up to anger against you, that they will not believe my words. 33 Thus Satan thinketh to overpower your testimony in this generation [JS and OC's testimony (witness) attesting to the veracity of the Book of Mormon would be called into question], that the work may not come forth in this generation.

34 But behold, here is wisdom, and because I show unto you wisdom, and give you commandments concerning these things [what to do about the lost manuscript], what you shall do, show it not unto the world until you have accomplished the work of translation. 35 Marvel not that I said unto you: Here is wisdom, show it not unto the world—for I said, show it not unto the world, that you may be preserved. 36 Behold, I do not say that you shall not show it unto the righteous; 37 But as you cannot always judge the righteous, or as you cannot always tell the wicked from the righteous, therefore I say unto you, hold your peace until I shall see fit to make all things known unto the world concerning the matter [because JS and OC can't discern who is good, the Lord tells them, to play it safe, to not sure .

38 And now, verily I say unto you, that an account of those things that you have written, which have gone out of your hands [the lost manuscript], is engraven upon the plates of Nephi [referring to the small plates of Nephi, which consist of the book of Nephi, Jacob, Enos, Jarom, and Omni]; 39 Yea, and you remember it was said in those writings [small plates of Nephi] that a more particular account was given of these things upon the plates of Nephi. 40 And now, because the account which is engraven upon the plates of Nephi is more particular concerning the things which, in my wisdom, I would bring to the knowledge of the people in this account [it appears that the small plates discuss the things of the Lord in more plainness that the book of Lehi and discussed the more important things]— 41 Therefore, you shall translate the engravings which are on the plates of Nephi, down even till you come to the reign of king Benjamin, or until you come to that which you have translated, which you have retained; 42 And behold, you shall publish it as the record of Nephi; and thus I will confound those who have altered my words.

43 I will not suffer that they [the wicked men] shall destroy my work; yea, I will show unto them that my wisdom is greater than the cunning of the devil. 44 Behold, they have only got a part, or an abridgment of the account of Nephi. 45 Behold, there are many things engraven upon the plates of Nephi which do throw greater views upon my gospel; therefore, it is wisdom in me that you should translate this first part of the engravings of Nephi, and send forth in this work. 46 And, behold, all the remainder of this work [not clear: could be referring to the remainder of the plates of Nephi or could refer to the writings that come after the small plats of Nephi (Mosiah onward). It depends what "this work" is referring to] does contain all those parts of my gospel which my holy prophets, yea, and also my disciples, desired in their prayers should come forth unto this people [The writings of the Book of Mormon (whatever that consists of) were the words that the writers in the Book of Mormon desired would come forth].

47 And I said unto them [the writers of the Book of Mormon], that it should be granted unto them according to their faith in their prayers; 48 Yea, and this was their [the writers of the Book of Mormon] faith—that my gospel, which I gave unto them [the writers of the Book of Mormon] that they might preach in their days, might come unto their brethren the Lamanites, and also all that had become Lamanites because of their dissensions. 49 Now, this is not all—their [the writers of the Book of Mormon] faith in their prayers was that this gospel should be made known also, if it were possible that other nations should possess this land; 50 And thus they did leave a blessing upon this land in their prayers, that whosoever should believe in this gospel in this land might have eternal life; 51 Yea, that it might be free unto all of whatsoever nation, kindred, tongue, or people they may be. 52 And now, behold, according to their [the writers of the Book of Mormon] faith in their prayers will I bring this part of my gospel to the knowledge of my people. Behold, I do not bring it to destroy that which they have received, but to build it up.

  • The writers of the Book of Mormon desired that the words they shared with their people (which were recorded in the Book of Mormon) would come forth to the Lamanites and those who possess their land (the United States). The Lord brought forth the Book of Mormon to the Gentiles (us) because of the faith and prayers of the the writers of the Book of Mormon. As a reminder this was what Enos prayed earnestly for:
15 Wherefore, I [Enos speaking] knowing that the Lord God was able to preserve our records, I cried unto him continually, for he had said unto me: Whatsoever thing ye shall ask in faith, believing that ye shall receive in the name of Christ, ye shall receive it. 16 And I had faith, and I did cry unto God that he would preserve the records; and he covenanted with me that he would bring them forth unto the Lamanites in his own due time. 17 And I, Enos, knew it would be according to the covenant which he had made; wherefore my soul did rest. 18 And the Lord said unto me: Thy fathers have also required of me this thing; and it shall be done unto them according to their faith; for their faith was like unto thine. (Enos 1)

53 And for this cause [the faith of the writers of the Book of Mormon] have I said: If this generation [referring to the people alive during JS' time] harden not their hearts, I will establish my church among them [JS' generation]. 54 Now I do not say this to destroy my church, but I say this to build up my church; 55 Therefore, whosoever belongeth to my church need not fear, for such shall inherit the kingdom of heaven. 56 But it is they who do not fear me, neither keep my commandments but build up churches unto themselves to get gain, yea, and all those that do wickedly and build up the kingdom of the devil—yea, verily, verily, I say unto you, that it is they that I will disturb, and cause to tremble and shake to the center.

57 Behold, I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I came unto mine own, and mine own received me not. 58 I am the light which shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not. 59 I am he who said—Other sheep have I which are not of this fold—unto my disciples, and many there were that understood me not. 60 And I will show unto this people that I had other sheep, and that they were a branch of the house of Jacob; 61 And I will bring to light their marvelous works, which they did in my name; 62 Yea, and I will also bring to light my gospel which was ministered unto them, and, behold, they shall not deny that which you have received, but they shall build it up, and shall bring to light the true points of my doctrine, yea, and the only doctrine which is in me.

63 And this I do that I may establish my gospel, that there may not be so much contention; yea, Satan doth stir up the hearts of the people to contention concerning the points of my doctrine; and in these things they do err, for they do wrest the scriptures and do not understand them [despite the learning of sects at the time, they misunderstand the scriptures and thus err]. 64 Therefore, I will unfold unto them this great mystery; 65 For, behold, I will gather them as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, if they will not harden their hearts; 66 Yea, if they will come, they may, and partake of the waters of life freely.

67 Behold, this is my doctrine—whosoever repenteth and cometh unto me, the same is my church. 68 Whosoever declareth more or less than this, the same is not of me, but is against me; therefore he is not of my church. 69 And now, behold, whosoever is of my church, and endureth of my church to the end, him will I establish upon my rock, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against them. 70 And now, remember the words of him who is the life and light of the world, your Redeemer, your Lord and your God. Amen.

  • In verses 67-70, Christ outlines that there are really two "churches". There is the legally recognized entity (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, often referred to as "the Church"). But there is also with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints those who have repented and are part of the Lord's church. To be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints comes through baptism and confirmation. To be a member of the the Lord's church comes from repentance -- living blameless before God. This means that one could be a member of the LDS church, but not a member of the Lord's church.
    • I've written a few posts about how to become a member of His church, which church transcends a legal entity. There is also a book I've been reading that provides an excellent explanation of how one can properly repent to be part of the Lord's church. The book is called "Putting on Christ." I strongly recommend it for those who are interested in this subject.

Section 11

Background Information

Section

Hyrum Smith visited his brother in Harmony, Pennsylvania, who were involved in translating the Book of Mormon. At Hyrum's earnest request" JS inquired "of the lord through the Urim and Thummi[m]" to receive a revelation for him. Hyrum's visit follows after other members of JS' family came to visit him. The first member was his dad, who received a revelation declaring the urgency of the work in which JS was involved in (see D&C 4). Later, in mid-May JS's brother, Samuel, visited and was later converted. "Not many days" after Samuel had returned home, Hyrum visited JS.

Notable in this revelation is that unlike JS' father, who was told that "if ye have desries to serve God ye are called to the work," the Lord was qualified in his words to Hyrum -- "you need not suppose you are called to preach until you are called." The Lord told him to wait until his knowledge was more extensive.

1 A great and marvelous work is about to come forth among the children of men [this statement was also declared to JS' father]. 2 Behold, I am God; give heed to my word, which is quick and powerful, sharper than a two-edged sword, to the dividing asunder of both joints and marrow; therefore give heed unto my word. 3 Behold, the field is white already to harvest; therefore, whoso desireth to reap let him thrust in his sickle with his might, and reap while the day lasts [again, the "day" does not last forever -- soon there'll be night where no labor can be performed], that he may treasure up for his soul everlasting salvation in the kingdom of God [we gain salvation by performing the the vineyard. And we perform our labor in the vineyard by our good works]. 4 Yea, whosoever will thrust in his sickle and reap, the same is called of God [those who labor are called by God. Although the calling varies for each person, this is the calling that we are to magnify] . 5 Therefore, if you will ask of me you shall receive; if you will knock it shall be opened unto you.

6 Now, as you have asked, behold, I say unto you, keep my commandments, and seek to bring forth and establish the cause of Zion [Zion has always been the end goal for the Lord. All are efforts in the last days should be to build a Zion people]. 7 Seek not for riches but for wisdom [to be effective labors, we must search for wisdom over worldy things]; and, behold, the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto you, and then shall you be made rich. Behold, he that hath eternal life is rich. 8 Verily, verily, I say unto you, even as you desire of me so it shall be done unto you; and, if you desire, you shall be the means of doing much good in this generation. 9 Say nothing but repentance unto this generation. Keep my commandments, and assist to bring forth my work, according to my commandments, and you shall be blessed.

10 Behold, thou hast a gift, or thou shalt have a gift if thou wilt desire of me in faith [we receive gifts from the Lord by exercising faith], with an honest heart, believing in the power of Jesus Christ, or in my power which speaketh unto thee; 11 For, behold, it is I that speak; behold, I am the light which shineth in darkness, and by my power I give these words unto thee. 12 And now, verily, verily, I say unto thee, put your trust in that Spirit which leadeth to do good—yea, to do justly, to walk humbly, to judge righteously; and this is my Spirit. 13 Verily, verily, I say unto you, I will impart unto you of my Spirit, which shall enlighten your mind, which shall fill your soul with joy; 14 And then shall ye know, or by this shall you know, all things whatsoever you desire of me, which are pertaining unto things of righteousness, in faith believing in me that you shall receive.

  • Functions of the Spirit
    • Leads us to do good
    • Leads us to be just
    • Leads us to be humble
    • Leads us to judge righteously
    • Enlighten our mind
    • Fill our soul with joy
    • Receiving the full gift of the Holy Ghost
  • Receiving What We Ask For: To receive the Holy Ghost, we must have fully come unto the Lord. And we can only come unto the Lord by "offering" our entire souls to Him.
    • 26 And now, my beloved brethren, I would that ye should come unto Christ, who is the Holy One of Israel, and partake of his salvation, and the power of his redemption. Yea, come unto him, and offer your whole souls as an offering unto him, and continue in fasting and praying, and endure to the end; and as the Lord liveth ye will be saved. (Omni 1:26)
    • Because we have offered our all, we submit to His will. And by submitting orient our mind around His purposes. And by doing this we know what is within His will and won't ask contrary. And because we don't ask contrary to His will, we are given what we ask. Because what we ask is within His will.

15 Behold, I command you that you need not suppose that you are called to preach until you are called [Hyrum must wait for the Lord to call him to the vineyard]. 16 Wait a little longer, until you shall have my word, my rock, my church, and my gospel, that you may know of a surety my doctrine [It appears that Hyrum needed the fullness of the Lord's gospel before he could teach. This is likely because he did not have correct understanding of doctrine and his efforts might have led people astray (see verse 21 below)]. 17 And then, behold, according to your desires, yea, even according to your faith shall it be done unto you. 18 Keep my commandments; hold your peace; appeal unto my Spirit; 19 Yea, cleave unto me with all your heart, that you may assist in bringing to light those things of which has been spoken—yea, the translation of my work; be patient until you shall accomplish it.

20 Behold, this is your work, to keep my commandments, yea, with all your might, mind and strength [quoting Duet. 6:3]21 Seek not to declare my word, but first seek to obtain my word, and then shall your tongue be loosed; then, if you desire, you shall have my Spirit and my word, yea, the power of God unto the convincing of men. 22 But now hold your peace; study my word which hath gone forth among the children of men, and also study my word which shall come forth among the children of men, or that which is now translating, yea, until you have obtained all which I shall grant unto the children of men in this generation, and then shall all things be added thereto.

23 Behold thou art Hyrum, my son; seek the kingdom of God, and all things shall be added according to that which is just. 24 Build upon my rock, which is my gospel; 25 Deny not the spirit of revelation, nor the spirit of prophecy, for wo unto him that denieth these things; 26 Therefore, treasure up in your heart until the time which is in my wisdom that you shall go forth.

27 Behold, I speak unto all who have good desires, and have thrust in their sickle to reap. 28 Behold, I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I am the life and the light of the world. 29 I am the same who came unto mine own and mine own received me not; 30 But verily, verily, I say unto you, that as many as receive me, to them will I give power to become the sons of God [a "son" of God is a title. One is not de facto son of God, but must become one], even to them that believe on my name. Amen.
